As moms, we often focus on making everyone else feel loved that we forget how meaningful it is to let our kids love us too. Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t the “perfect” present — it’s watching their excitement, thoughtfulness, and pride in giving it.

I took my kids shopping with their own money to pick out gifts, and honestly, what meant the most wasn’t what they bought. It was the time they spent thinking about me, the little details they noticed, and the joy they felt giving it. Those moments matter.

Let your kids have opportunities to show love in the ways they can. Whether it’s a handwritten note, picked flowers, a silly trinket, breakfast in bed, or a carefully chosen gift — it helps teach thoughtfulness, gratitude, connection, and love.

Celebrating moms isn’t about perfection or expensive gifts. It’s about love being shown in meaningful ways.

May’s book recommendation: Microjoys by Cyndie Spiegel 🌿

There’s a reason people call May “Maycember.” Between end-of-school events, sports, performances, testing, graduations, parties, and trying to keep up with everyday life, May can feel just as chaotic as December for families with children.

That’s why this month’s recommendation felt especially fitting.

Microjoys is a gentle reminder that even in the middle of overwhelming schedules and constant motion, small moments still matter. A quiet cup of coffee. A laugh in the carpool line. The way your child reaches for your hand. A deep breath between the chaos.

The book encourages us to intentionally notice the small joys woven into everyday life — not because life is perfect, but because sometimes those tiny moments are what help carry us through the hard and hectic seasons.

In a month full of rushing, this is your reminder to slow down enough to notice the little things. They matter more than we realize. 💛

Therapist Book Recommendation for April: The Expectations Effect by David Robson

This month’s recommendation is The Expectations Effect, a thought-provoking book that explores how our expectations can influence everything from stress and health to performance, learning, and overall wellbeing. David Robson uses research and real-life examples to show that our mindset does not just affect how we think, but can also shape how we experience the world. I appreciate that this book is both grounded in science and full of practical insight, offering a helpful reminder that the stories we tell ourselves matter.

This is a great read for anyone interested in personal growth, self-awareness, and the powerful connection between mind and body.

When past hurts and strong emotions show up in a relationship, it can be easy to fall into distorted thinking patterns like assuming the worst, mind reading, overgeneralizing, or reacting from old pain instead of the present moment.

In couples counseling, one of the biggest goals is helping partners slow the cycle down and recognize what is really happening underneath the conflict.

Often the pattern looks like this:
Trigger → emotional reaction → distorted thought → protective response → more disconnection

Healing begins when couples learn to:
pause before reacting,
separate facts from assumptions,
identify the deeper hurt,
share needs with vulnerability,
and respond to each other with more safety and understanding.

A helpful reminder:
The problem is not always your partner.
Sometimes the problem is the cycle you both get pulled into.

Slow the story.
Find the wound.
Share the need.
Change the response.

This is where deeper understanding, connection, and repair can begin.

Divided into short chapters that explore life’s essential truths, Almost Everything highlights those small moments of clarity while shining an encouraging light forward.

💛 Why it’s perfect for mental health:
Lamott’s gentle humor and spiritual wisdom offer comfort during anxiety and depression while also providing practical hope for healing. Her writing feels like a conversation with a wise friend reminding you that even in difficult seasons, hope is still present.

📖 If you're looking for something reflective, encouraging, and easy to pick up in short moments, this is a beautiful book to add to your March reading list.
