Today, we pause to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Day and stand with everyone whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.

Today is a reminder of the importance of awareness, early detection, support, and hope. We honor those we have lost, celebrate survivors, and stand alongside those currently facing breast cancer.

Let’s continue to encourage one another, share awareness, and support the people in our lives who may need a little extra strength today and every day. 💗

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month 💙💛

This month, we celebrate people with Down syndrome and recognize the unique strengths, talents, and contributions they bring to their families and communities.

Down syndrome is a naturally occurring genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. People with Down syndrome have their own personalities, interests, abilities, and goals—and, like everyone else, they deserve opportunities to learn, grow, participate, and thrive.

Awareness helps build understanding, but inclusion helps create meaningful change. This month and throughout the year, let’s celebrate differences, challenge misconceptions, and create communities where everyone belongs.

Different is beautiful. Inclusion matters.

🌟 Resource Spotlight: Sensory Friendly Morning at the Virginia Zoo!

The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is hosting a Sensory Friendly Morning on November 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Guests can enjoy a more comfortable, lower-stimulation experience with:
• Limited capacity and timed entry
• Dimmed lighting in select buildings
• Reduced-stimulus activities
• Small-scale animal interactions
• Sensory resources, including noise-canceling headphones and fidgets

You don’t need a specific diagnosis to participate. If a sensory-friendly environment would help you enjoy the zoo, you’re welcome to attend!

🎟️ Advance tickets are required.

🚨 IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR CONSUMER-DIRECTED SERVICES 🚨

When it comes to Consumer Directed Services, attendants should NEVER provide services when the required authorization is not on file.

Authorizations are more than just paperwork—they confirm that services are approved and can be properly documented, billed, and paid. Working without the appropriate authorization can create serious problems for everyone involved.

❌ What could happen if services are provided without authorization?

• Hours may be denied and not paid
• Claims may need to be reversed or recouped
• The attendant may not receive payment for hours worked

Most importantly, providing services without proper authorization can create unnecessary stress for the consumer, their family, and the attendant.

âś… Always verify authorization before services are provided.

If there is no current authorization on file, do not work until the authorization issue has been resolved and confirmed. Please contact your assigned Service Facilitator directly if there is no current authorization.

Can't figure out how to view the authorizations in the Fiscal Agent portal? Give our FA Support team a call for assistance - 800-417-0908 (opt. 1 twice) or contact your Fiscal Agent directly

Building an inclusive community means creating opportunities for everyone to participate, connect, and grow.

Community Knights, Inc. works to do just that by providing individualized skill-building experiences for people with disabilities. Serving the Virginia Peninsula, their programs help participants build workplace and life skills, gain real-world experience, and overcome barriers to community involvement.

Their READY Program connects high school students with disabilities to local businesses for workplace experiences and internships, while Knight Rides helps remove transportation barriers through safe, point-to-point transportation.

Community Knights also offers opportunities for community members to get involved through volunteering, becoming a worksite partner, sponsorships, and more.

We’re grateful for organizations working to create more inclusive and connected communities across Virginia!

For Anna, the “why” began long before she joined Moms In Motion.

After seeing loved ones navigate serious health challenges without knowing about the resources and support that were available, she knows firsthand how much it can mean for a family to simply have someone explain their options and point them toward help.

Today, as our Director of Outreach & Engagement, Anna works to connect families, community partners, and the people supporting them with information about waivers, resources, Consumer-Directed Services, and Virginia Medicaid Waivers.

She knows that one conversation, one follow-up, or even one social media post can help a family find support sooner.

“I can’t go back and give my family the information we needed then. But I can help another family find support sooner.”

That’s Anna’s why—and we’re grateful she continues to share it with the families and communities we serve. 💙

Your Plan of Care Matters. đź’™

Your Plan of Care (POC) outlines the services and tasks authorized based on an individual’s assessed needs. Knowing what’s in the POC is important for both families and attendants—especially with EVV requirements now applying to all attendants.

When using EVV, attendants need to understand when they are authorized to provide services and what tasks are included in the POC. Knowing the plan helps attendants accurately record their time and provide services according to the authorized schedule.

Needs and schedules can change, too. Families should reach out to their Service Facilitator (SF) if:

• The individual needs more or less assistance with daily activities
• The daily routine or schedule has changed
• The current authorized schedule no longer reflects the individual’s needs
• There are questions about which tasks are authorized
• You’re unsure what is included in the current POC

Are you the EOR and can’t find your Plan of Care in your email?
Send us an email at [email protected], and we’ll help you get another copy.

Know your plan. Know your schedule. And when needs change, reach out to your SF.

October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month đź’ś

This month, we raise awareness of Rett syndrome and recognize the individuals and families whose lives are touched by it. We celebrate the strength, individuality, and resilience of those living with Rett syndrome and honor the families, caregivers, and communities who support them.

Awareness helps build understanding, encourage inclusion, and support continued research toward better treatments and improved quality of life.

Together, we can help create a world where every person is seen for who they are and supported in reaching their fullest potential.
