PSA! You CAN use silverette ni**le covers incorrectly!

They’re meant to be used to heal ni**les, BUT using incorrectly can actually prolong healing time 🫠🫠🫠

Did you know this or was this new to you? Share with an expecting mom friend or a mom who’s using silverettes!

How to correctly apply a ni**le shield!

This is just a demo breast here, so it doesn’t draw the breast into the shield like it will with real tissue, but trust me, it’ll make a huge difference in how much breast tissue baby is able to take into their mouth which means a deeper, more comfortable latch, and one where your baby will be able to transfer milk more effectively!

Did anyone ever teach you this? Try it out and see the difference!

Rapid Fire my thoughts on 9 popular infant pacifiers as a lactation consultant.

Did any of these surprise you? Did your babe love or hate any of these? Which else do you want to see rated? Let me know in the comments.

And a gentle reminder that nothing is one size fits all and what works for one baby may not work for another!

Think you have elastic ni**les? You may want a second opinion.

If your ni**le is being pulled far back into the fl**ge tunnel while you pump, that doesn’t automatically mean you have elastic tissue/nips

Oftentimes, it’s a sign that your fl**ge may be too large and here’s wby:

Breast tissue, including the ar**la, and ni**le are designed to swell and fill the space it’s given.

So when you give your breast tissue a lot of extra room inside the fl**ge tunnel, that tissue can get pulled in to occupy that space.

And that matters because with a fl**ge that’s too large, breast tissue and ar**la can be pulled into the tunnel when ideally, primarily the ni**le should be moving through the tunnel.

That extra tissue being pulled in can:
• Cause discomfort or swelling
• Make pumping less comfortable
• Compress milk ducts
• Make it harder for milk to flow freely
• Potentially decrease your pumping output

And if you’re pumping to remove milk, decreased milk removal is usually NOT the goal. 😅

So if your ni**le is being pulled way back into the tunnel and you’ve been told you have “elastic ni**les,” consider getting your fl**ge size evaluated by someone who understands breast anatomy AND pumping mechanics.

Elastic tissue is real BUT not every ni**le that travels far back into the tunnel is elastic.

Save this for your next pumping session & send it to a pumping mom who needs to hear it!

A reminder to all the families out there this World Breastfeeding Week-

I know this week can bring up hard thoughts when your plans of feeding your baby didn’t necessarily go according to plan, but I want to remind you, that this week isn’t meant to condemn or only celebrate those whose feeding journeys may be considered a “success” but is a week to celebrate every drop, milestone, hurdle, and hurt that you feeding journey may have brought you. It’s also meant to bring awareness to the importance of breastfeeding and also to shed light on that our system is frankly broken and flawed.

Access to skilled lactation support is often lacking in many parts of the world and right in our own neighborhoods. And that access is even more so incredibly limited even more to those of color, and of lower socioeconomic status. Lactation care is often dictated by insurance covering what “they see acceptable” which in the Midwest means that lactation care is often covered only if your IBCLC is also an MD, PA, or NP. I could go on and on about this and how frustrating insurance and the “system” is, but will stop there for today.

Let this be your reminder- your feeding journey IS important and valuable, regardless of what it looked or didn’t look like and I’m proud of you, friend, for doing the best you could. Wish I could give you all a big virtual hug this World Breastfeeding Week! 🫶🏻
