Glimmer moments... I saw these at a nursery this spring and HAD to get them... because the flowers look like they're laughing! Do you see it? They are in a pot at the bottom of my deck stairs that we pass every morning on our way out to walk... and I can't help but smile every time I pass them and say good morning!

The ither morning, it took me a moment to remember a childhood show I watched that had a "giggle patch," where the flowers giggled. That's what these remind me of! A little moment of random joy every day!

Do you have something that makes you smile every day, if even for a moment in passing?

Yesterday was 32 years... (which of course DOES NOT compute, since I'm only 35 LOL!) since we got married on a whim... with no real blueprint!

Many have asked me, "What's the magic formula?" for lasting in marriage. And there are many who have said how lucky we are, etc.

I don't really see it as luck. To be honest, there are always ups and downs and all-arounds. Rough spots, straight-out crappy spots, in any relationship, no matter how much you love each other. And the longer you go, the more there are, because life happens.

Of course, there are also many reasons to laugh, to love, and to play, too. (One of the reasons I joke with the kids that I've kept Scott Coulter around so long is due to his ability to find some weird moment to spontaneously do something that makes me laugh until I'm crying and I can't breathe...)

At some point, it becomes CHOOSING to be here, every single day. Once the kids were grown, and that wasn't the glue we believed was holding us together, it became a huge lesson on finding out who we are individually every day, while simultaneously choosing to walk life's path next to each other.

Now is the time for us to really explore!

Happy 32nd wedding anniversary to my partner in life, as we continue walking that path together! I love you!

Yesterday, my fellow graduate students and I spent the day at the WHO! We had the fortune to sit with various leading members to talk about some of the hot topics in the vision for today's global health. The buildings are beautiful, with "Walk the Talk" as the message everywhere.

After, we got to sit in the Executive Board Room... 😊

"REALLY... why are you here?"

A remarkable woman I met in Geneva asked me this before one of the World Health Assembly talks. I'd already told her what I was doing there — but it made me think.

"I'm here because I'm tired of living in a country of self-interested exploitation. I wanted to be with people focused on the health of the whole world, moving forward together."

She ran an organization working for women's equity in African nations. Of course she did!

That's exactly what I experienced at the talks, panels, and discussions around the WHA — incredible people making a massive effort to level the global playing field. Reproductive health, sexual equity, climate change, social determinants of health... the rest of the world is showing up, naming the challenges, and funding solutions — while the U.S. sits in self-imposed exclusion.

I've been in the same rooms as dignitaries, NGO executives, high-ranking politicians, WHO committee heads, and so many others who simply want to figure out how we make things right. Is it perfect? Far from it. But the voices are intelligent, capable, and sane.

A moment that hit me in the heart: An indigenous woman from New Zealand — head of the World Federation of Public Health Associations — began her presentation by removing her shoes. In her culture, the God of War inhabits the 10 feet outside a dwelling's door. So they remove their shoes to ensure no conflict enters the space. She then reminded us to stop seeing "population" as data, numbers, and dollars — and remember we're people, together on this planet.

We also kicked off the WHA with a walk — music, dancing, people from everywhere, celebrated together. No politics. Just one question:

How do we create health as a fundamental human right for everyone, amid climate change and continued conflict?

Hard questions; many answers! But one thing is clear — exclusion, political tantrums, and bullying aren't getting the world anywhere.

I'm now on week 2 here. More to come! 🌍

It's that time of year that Obi likes to sit in the front with me at lunch time for a short bit. He thinks he's a jungle kitty, laying next to the sage (or he likes the smell/vibe)!
