A lot of people are stopping their sets because they’ve decided on 10 reps, not because the muscle is actually done.
If you hit rep 10 and could’ve done 15, that wasn’t a hard set just because the last couple burned.
Your body doesn’t know what number you wrote in your program. The goal is to make those reps challenging enough that you’re actually getting close to failure — while still controlling the weight and keeping your form together.
And no, that doesn’t mean taking every set to absolute failure. But you should know what failure feels like if you’re going to accurately judge what “2 reps left” feels like.
Sometimes you don’t need a new exercise, a new split, or some fancy technique.
You need to stop treating the rep number like a finish line.
