A great way to strengthen your communication skills is through the use of “I Feel” statements. These statements can help build connection and allow for a way to clearly communicate needs without conveying blame. You can follow a simple formula to begin that goes like, “When (this happens), I feel (emotion) because (why you feel this way). In the future I would prefer that (what action would be more helpful in the future). This phrasing can allow for empathy to grow while allowing for a conversation to continue. Read more about "I feel" statements on our blog post at https://healingllc.com/2026/03/what-i-feel-statements-are-and-why-they-matter-in-relationships/

If you’ve ever noticed your breath feeling short when you're stressed, then you may have experienced your breath's connection to your nervous system. Just as stress can influence your breath, your breath can help calm your stress response. The practice can be as simple as noticing the qualities of your breath- depth, length of each part (inhalation, exhalation, and pauses), and textures. This breath focus can aid in calming your nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety, inviting present moment awareness, and helping bring a sense of grounding.

Are you having difficulty putting down your phone while scrolling through distressing news or social media? You’re not alone. Doomscrolling is a common response to anxiety especially during uncertain times — our brains want to protect us, searching for safety, clarity, or control, even when this may increase stress.

Steps that can help with Anxiety:
• Gently notice when scrolling increases your anxiety
• Set small time boundaries with your phone or news intake
• Balance your feed with calming or supportive content
• Practice self-compassion — anxiety thrives on uncertainty (the stress response innate in human beings)

At Gaithersburg Counseling Center, we support individuals, couples and families struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, trauma and overwhelm by helping them understand themselves, their patterns and by building effective coping tools. If anxiety, stress, or the weight of the world is interrupting your daily life, support is available — you don’t have to manage it all alone. Contact us at https://healingllc.com/contact-us/

Seasonal Affective Disorder, or more frequently referred to as Seasonal Depression, is a type of depression that occurs in the wintertime as sunlight hours decrease.

Many people experience fluctuations in emotions in the winter. Although this does not necessarily mean that you have seasonal depression, it is certainly a common feeling. Here are some ways to combat the seasonal lows that you may experience!

Some people find that creating structure in their schedule during the winter allows for better regulation of emotions. It can help avoid periods of boredom or isolation.

Try out creative ways of getting yourself moving! Participate in dancing workout videos, sign up for a stretch session at a nearby gym, or do some indoor rock climbing.

There's lots of ways to improve our mood during these (literally) darker months. Feel free to reach out to us if you've been considering talking to someone about what you're feeling. Call, Text, or Email (240)274-5680 and [email protected]. And in the meantime, take some time for YOU!
