National Grief Awareness Day | August 30th

Today is a day to pause and remember the people we love who are no longer here.

Grief is love with nowhere to go. It’s missing their voice, their laugh, their hugs, and the little things that once seemed so ordinary. It’s the empty chair at the table, the familiar song that brings back a thousand memories, and the moments when you still reach for your phone before remembering you can’t call them anymore.

Grief doesn’t end when the funeral is over. It changes. It becomes part of who we are, and we learn to carry both the sadness of their absence and the love they left behind.

Today, we encourage you to say their name. Share a memory. Look at the pictures. Tell someone about them. Remembering someone doesn’t keep us stuck in grief—it honors the life they lived and the love that will always remain.

And if today is a hard day for you, please know you don't have to pretend you're okay. Give yourself permission to grieve, however that looks for you.

This event is about more than just a walk. It’s about remembering the people we love, honoring those who have fought their battles, celebrating survivors, and coming together as a community to support one another.

We all have a story. We all have someone we remember, someone we celebrate, or someone whose journey has touched our lives.

We invite you to bring your family and friends and walk with us as we share their stories, honor their journeys, and celebrate hope and survivorship.

The walk is free and open to everyone, and there will be music, entertainment, guest speakers, family-friendly activities, and a Dedication Wall where you can leave a special message of love, hope, or remembrance.

August is Grief Awareness Month.

Grief is a journey that looks different for everyone. It doesn’t have a timeline, and there is no “right” or “wrong” way to grieve.

This month, we want to remind you to:
💚 Be patient with yourself and others who are grieving.
💚 Listen without trying to fix or minimize someone’s pain.
💚 Remember that grief can come from many types of loss—not just the loss of a loved one.
💚 Reach out to someone who may be struggling. Sometimes simply saying, “I’m here for you,” can mean so much.

At Avita Home Health & Hospice, we understand that grief doesn’t end when hospice care ends. We are here to support individuals and families through their grief journey.

Caring for a loved one receiving hospice care can feel overwhelming, and caregivers may sometimes feel helpless or unsure of what to expect.

We’re sharing this helpful podcast from The Hospice Heart that focuses on caregiving for a loved one in hospice care—including what caregivers may experience and how they can better navigate this important journey.

If you’re caring for someone in hospice, know that you are not alone. There is support, guidance, and help available.

If you are a caregiver, personally or professionally, this is a great podcast for you, especially if you are supporting someone who is declining from age or illness and nearing the end of their life.

I was asked some really great questions, many of which are the very questions I hear from people at the bedside most of the time.

What happens when someone starts to decline?
What should I expect?
What do I do when I’m scared or unsure?
How do I know if something is normal?

And perhaps most importantly…how do I simply show up for someone I love?

We talk about caregiving, but we also talk about something that is just as important: how to be present. How to understand what you’re seeing, how to feel a little less frightened by the things that can happen at the bedside, and how to offer comfort and connection when you may not have the words or know exactly what to do.

If you have questions, concerns, fears, or uncertainty about caring for someone who is approaching the end of life, I hope you will listen.

I think this podcast will be helpful, and maybe even give you a little more confidence for one of the most important things we can do for another human being, which is to be there for them.

Our team was out and about this weekend!

We kicked off the weekend by setting up at Crawford County Chamber of Commerce first Friday in Crestline, where we had a great time meeting and chatting with everyone who stopped by!

Then Saturday was a busy one! We started the morning by helping with the Avita Foundation 's Moving Hearts & Soles 5K and then headed over to the The Galion City Health Department Family Fun Day. We had so much fun at the event playing games, handing out goodies, and spending time with everyone who stopped by our table!

It was definitely a busy weekend, but we wouldn’t have it any other way! We are so thankful for every opportunity to get out into our communities, share what we do, and connect with so many wonderful people.

We would like to give a huge thank you and shout-out to everyone and all of the businesses that donated to make our Healing Hearts Grief Camp possible. Because of your generosity, our campers experienced two meaningful days filled with healing, hope, laughter, friendship, and memories that will last a lifetime.

We are incredibly grateful for the amazing support we received from our community. Your donations helped provide activities, meals, crafts, and a safe, caring environment where children could express their feelings, connect with others who understand their grief, and begin to heal.

Thank you for believing in our mission and for making a difference in the lives of local children and their families. We truly couldn't have done it without our local community and your kindness and support. 💚
