I truly hate having to close, especially when I know some of you plan your day around stopping by. But today, I simply don’t have anyone available to cover the shop.

**THE STORY BEHIND STONE HARMONY | PART 4**

After I came home, the cancer journey was nowhere near over.

I eventually had the sutures removed and started radiation treatments.

And radiation brought a whole new set of problems.

At one point, we actually had to **STOP the treatments** because the radiation was burning the surgical area and causing the wound to open back up.

So once again...

**I had to heal.**

We gave my body some time, and then I continued radiation.

Somewhere in the middle of all of this, I started developing a lot of fluid in my thigh and leg.

I went to a local hospital, and they decided to drain it.

At the time, I didn't know there was an issue with them doing that.

But my oncologist at Vanderbilt found out about it **after the fact.**

And baby...

He was NOT happy.

😂

I remember him having a very **stern** conversation with them.

From what I understood at the time, draining it the way they did could have caused adverse effects because of the type of cancer and surgery I had undergone.

The message was basically:

**Don't touch her again.**

That was another moment when I realized just how different my situation was.

Not everybody necessarily knew how to handle what was happening with my body.

Then came the wound care.

I remember having a pump attached to the wound on the back of my leg. It collected fluid and had to be changed when it filled.

Home-health nurses would come about every other day to check the wound, clean it and change the dressing.

And let me tell you...

**That mess HURT.**

The nurses knew it too.

They would call me when they were on their way and tell me to take a certain pain medication so it would have time to start working before they arrived.

But there was **one nursing visit** that stands out in my memory for a completely different reason.

One of the nurses stopped what she was doing...

**and started praying over me.**

I couldn't tell you every word she prayed today.

I couldn't tell you exactly which visit it was.

But I remember her praying.

In the middle of all the medical stuff...

the wound.

the pump.

the dressing changes.

the medication.

the pain.

**She stopped and prayed over me.**

At the time, I wasn't thinking about Stone Harmony.

I wasn't trying to attach some big spiritual meaning to what was happening.

I was just a woman trying to heal...

and somebody stopped long enough to pray for me.

**I remembered that.**

And apparently, Punkin took her job during all of this VERY seriously too. 😂🐾

My little dog would sit in the corner of my bedroom and WATCH those nurses while they worked on me.

I'm talking about watching them like:

**“I don't know what y'all are doing to my Mama, but you better do it RIGHT.”**

😂😂😂

Remember, this is the same Punkin who had been sitting at the window waiting for me to come home.

Well, Mama was home now...

and Punkin had apparently promoted herself to **Director of Nursing.** 😂🐾

Andrew eventually learned how to clean my wound and change everything for me too.

And after a while...

**I started doing it myself.**

That's something I think about now.

There are things you can look at and swear:

**“I could NEVER do that.”**

Until life puts you in a position where it has to be done.

Then somehow...

you do it.

But while my body was going through all of this, life around me didn't stop.

Andrew was still working.

We still had four boys—

**Jamel, Jordan, Jaylaun and Jakhari.**

There was still a household.

There were still meals.

There were still birthdays.

There was still LIFE.

And people showed up for me.

I remember people stopping by to help.

I remember people sitting with me during the day just to keep me company.

And I remember my boys taking care of their Mama too.

My older boys cooked me a REALLY good meal one day.

**I still have the picture.** 💜

And one of my younger boys made me cupcakes...

**with little umbrellas in them.** 😂💜

I still have that picture too.

And that's the funny thing about memory.

Ask me exactly how many surgeries I had during that period?

**I don't know.**

Ask me the exact order everything happened?

Some of it is a blur.

But I remember that meal.

I remember those cupcakes.

**I remember those little umbrellas.**

I remember people sitting with me.

I remember Andrew taking care of my wound.

I remember Punkin sitting in that corner watching those nurses.

And I remember a nurse stopping in the middle of caring for my wound...

**and praying over me.**

Some of the medical details blurred.

**The love didn't.**

And somewhere in the middle of ALL of this, my heart apparently decided we didn't have enough going on already.

The first time it happened stands out because it was **one of my son's birthdays.**

I was trying to have a little party for him.

Because regardless of what was happening to me...

**I was still Mama.**

Cancer didn't stop birthdays.

Radiation didn't stop birthdays.

Wound pumps didn't stop birthdays.

My baby's birthday was still his birthday, and I was trying to make it feel as normal as possible.

Then my heart took off.

**Over 237 beats per minute.**

It got stuck in that rhythm and had to be medically stopped/reset.

And it wasn't the last time.

This happened on **three separate occasions.**

Eventually, I had to have a **cardiac ablation.**

Was the heart issue connected to everything else my body was going through?

The cancer?

The radiation?

The surgeries?

The infections?

The medications?

The stress on my body?

**I don't know.**

And I'm not going to look back all these years later and make a medical connection I can't prove.

What I DO know is that my body was going through **A LOT.**

Apparently my heart just decided it wanted to participate too.

😩😂

And there were more infections.

At some point that year, I had another surgery because of an infection.

Actually, there were so many procedures, infections, hospital visits and surgeries during that period that I honestly don't remember how many surgeries I had.

Some of it just runs together.

I even remember taking a road trip to Virginia with my mom.

We made it all the way to Virginia...

only for me to have to drive **straight back to Vanderbilt** because of another infection.

That pretty much sums up that period of my life.

You could be trying to do something completely NORMAL...

and suddenly...

**back to Vanderbilt.**

But all of that healing came with something else.

**Downtime.**

A LOT of downtime.

My body couldn't do everything it normally did.

So my mind went to work.

I started reading.

Researching.

Studying.

**A LOT.**

I found old books.

Lost books.

I started studying different spiritual paths.

One subject would lead me to another.

I'd read something and think:

**“Wait a minute...what is THAT?”**

And there I'd go.

Down another rabbit hole.

😂

I had time.

And apparently I had a whole lot of questions.

I read things I agreed with.

I read things I didn't agree with.

I learned about beliefs and practices I had never really explored before.

I questioned things.

I compared things.

I researched things for myself.

And somewhere in all of that...

**my world started getting bigger.**

But I need y'all to understand something.

**Stone Harmony still did NOT exist.**

There was no business plan.

There was no metaphysical store.

There was no Mama J.

I certainly wasn't sitting in my bedroom with a wound pump attached to the back of my leg saying:

**“You know what? I'm going to open Stone Harmony.”**

😂😂😂

Absolutely NOT.

I was trying to heal.

Trying to be a wife to Andrew.

Trying to be Mama to **Jamel, Jordan, Jaylaun and Jakhari.**

Trying to get through radiation.

Trying to keep a wound from getting infected.

Trying to deal with a heart that apparently thought 237 beats per minute was acceptable behavior.

And trying to get back to some version of NORMAL.

Reading and researching simply gave my mind somewhere else to go while my body couldn't.

**At least that's what I thought I was doing.**

Looking back now, I can see something I couldn't see then.

While my body was being forced to slow down...

**my mind was opening up.**

I didn't know I was laying any kind of foundation.

I didn't know some of those books would matter later.

I didn't know those questions would matter.

I didn't know exploring different spiritual paths would matter.

And I certainly couldn't see **Stone Harmony** from where I was sitting.

All I could see was what was directly in front of me:

The next doctor's appointment.

The next dressing change.

The next treatment.

The next infection.

The next day.

**Just keep going.**

But now?

Looking backward?

I can see the breadcrumbs.

The nurse praying over me.

The hours spent reading.

The questions.

The research.

The spiritual exploration.

The forced stillness.

None of those things looked like **Stone Harmony** at the time.

And we're still a LONG way from getting there.

But little by little...

**the pieces were starting to appear.**

I just didn't know what they were pieces **of** yet.
