8 secrets to a Successful Back-to-School Dental Checkup

Regular dental checkups are important year-round! Prevention and early detection can help avoid pain, trouble eating, difficulty speaking and school absences.

1. Plan Ahead: Schedule that visit to avoid the August rush.
2. Encourage good dental habits at home: best appointments are cavity free ones! Encourage brushing for two minutes at home. Age 5-6 years need parental help with oral hygiene care. Ages 7-12, need encouragement. Ages 12-18, need to be careful with cavities.
3. Timing of appointment: Be sure not during nap time.
4. Make one child the model for others: let the child with more successful dental appointments go first to ease the other kids into being seated.
5. Eat before seeing dentist: a hungry child is not a happy one. Eating a light meal before coming in is great and be sure to brush right after.
6. Leave your anxiety at the door. Kids pick up on their parent’s anxiety.
7. Keep cool if your child does not cooperate. It is a new experience for your child, so let the dentist and dental team take charge.
8. Grab some cards to share with your child’s teacher and office staff in case any emergency happens. Accidents do happen, so best to have on file so they can call the office.

The Link Between Medications and Cavities 💊🦷
You may wonder why suddenly you are getting cavities when you did not have them in years. As we get older, we enter cavity prone years. One common cause of cavities is dry mouth, it is not a normal sign of aging. Instead, it happens over time with medications side effects, including those for allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pain, anxiety or depression, and diseases. This is why it is important to tell your dentist the medications you are on to prevent cavities. Here are some recommendations:
- [ ] Use spray and mouthwash
- [ ] Consult with physician to change medication or dosage
- [ ] Drink more water
- [ ] Use sugar free gum or lozenges to stimulate saliva flow
- [ ] Humidifier to keep moisture in air

3. Do I Need to Take Antibiotics Before a Dental Procedure? Antibiotics are needed to be taken before certain dental procedures. This is called “antibiotic prophylaxis.” We all have bacteria in our mouths, and for healthy immune system, bacteremia is not an issue. For those with compromised immune systems, bacteria can cause an infection and a serious issue. Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for those patients with compromised immune systems, especially with artificial joints.
