Set your young athlete up for a successful sports season by being mindful of their health and safety!

Hydration and nutrition are important. Encourage your child to drink 5 to 8 ounces of water or an electrolyte drink every 20 minutes during sports. Be sure they eat about 45 minutes before exercise, and 30 to 60 minutes afterward. Include protein and carbohydrates for fuel.

Sleep and rest are essential for your young athlete's muscle growth and recovery. They also have a protective effect against injury and illness.

Before your child's sports season starts, make sure they have all the protective gear they need and that it fits properly. For sports without gear, make sure your child always has adult supervision.

Is your child starting to feel the first day of school jitters? There are a few ways that you can help ease their anxiety.

Take your child to visit their new school or classroom before the first day. Remind them that their teachers know that some students may be nervous and are there to help them.

Talk to your child about their worries and help them problem-solve ways to cope. Then point out the fun aspects of school that they can look forward to.

Ahead of the first day, find another child in the neighborhood your child can carpool with or ride with on the bus. Getting to school early can also help cut down on extra stress.

It’s kinda chic to get away, but somebody’s got to hold things down in Rockland County this summer. Thank you to my hardworking colleagues and busy patient families for making my 16th summer at NRP so rewarding. Were you also hard at work locally this summer? Were you a camp counsellor? Did you volunteer for the fire department? Were you growing a garden, or working a check out counter? Were you a lifeguard or a summer school teacher? Did you fold back to school clothes in retail? Did you go from appointment to appointment, checking off physicals, dentists, hair cuts, mini van maintenance and more? Share with me how you took care of things in RC this summer.

Summer is here- and so are ticks and mosquitoes. Keep your child healthy and safe outdoors when playing in grassy or wooded areas. For children over the age of 2 months, use a bug repellent containing either DEET (no more than
30%) or lemon eucalyptus oil. Spray repellent on clothes as much as possible rather than the skin, and steer clear of spraying on the hands and face.
