A few weeks into the school year, what's new is starting to become familiar and those everyday routines are beginning to matter more than you might realize. 💚

For young children, routines are about so much more than staying on schedule. Familiar moments throughout the day can help children know what to expect, feel secure during transitions, build healthy habits, and create a stronger sense of connection and belonging.

The good news? Routines don’t have to be complicated. ✨ Getting dressed in the morning, a hug before school, talking together at dinner, or reading the same bedtime story each night can all become comforting cues children learn to count on.

At The Nest Schools, we see that same power in the classroom. Predictable rhythms give children the security of knowing what comes next while leaving plenty of room to play, explore, create, move, and discover.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember: children need predictable parents, not perfect parents. 💚

Nest Play Curriculum is growing right alongside our children!

As we enter Year 6 we’re introducing thoughtful updates designed to make purposeful play even more intentional, adaptable, and connected.

With clearer learning goals, more ways for teachers to bring activities to life, and parent-friendly activity summaries that show what children are learning along the way, these updates make Nest Play even more meaningful for teachers, children, and families.

When we understand the why behind the play, we can see just how much learning is happening in every moment. ✨

BIG news for The Nest Schools! ⭐🎉
Our proprietary Nest Play Curriculum, which guides learning across our schools, has received exciting recognition from not one, but TWO states!

⭐ Ohio has approved Nest Play through its Step Up To Quality program.
⭐ North Carolina has named Nest Play an approved curriculum through the North Carolina Child Care Commission and NC DCDEE.

While these recognitions come from Ohio and North Carolina, they celebrate the curriculum our children and teachers experience across The Nest Schools every day. 💚

They reinforce something we’ve always believed: play-based learning is REAL learning. Every tower built, question sparked, masterpiece created, pretend game played, and discovery made is an opportunity to build the skills, confidence, creativity, and curiosity children will carry with them for years to come. ✨

We’re incredibly proud of Nest Play, the educators who bring it to life, and this recognition of the meaningful learning happening in our classrooms every day.

New school year, new routines, and sometimes…new behaviors. 😅💛

Changes in schedules, classrooms, expectations, and everyday routines can be a lot for children to process. When children don’t yet have the words or the developmental skills to explain everything they’re feeling, those feelings can show up through their behavior instead.

So when the after-school meltdown happens or emotions suddenly feel a little bigger than usual, there may be more going on beneath the surface.

Yesterday, we talked about what to do when those tough moments get the best of us. Today, we’re looking at what those big moments might be telling us about them.

Because sometimes, big behavior is a bigger message. 💛

New routines, busy mornings, changing schedules, big feelings… back-to-school season can be an adjustment for parents, too. 💛

Sometimes, in the middle of all that change, we lose our cool. We raise our voice. We react in a way we wish we hadn’t. What happens next matters.

Taking the time to repair, to acknowledge what happened, apologize, and talk about the feelings involved shows children something incredibly important: We all have big emotions. We all make mistakes. And we can take responsibility and make things right.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember that emotional intelligence isn’t about handling every moment perfectly. Sometimes, some of the most meaningful lessons come from what we do after a hard moment. 🪺💛

🥁🎶 Our Ducklings were marching to the beat of their own drum!

Our little musicians got groovy with drums and tambourines as they explored rhythm, beat, and the joy of making music. Musical play helps develop listening skills, coordination, timing, and gross motor skills while encouraging creativity, self-expression, and confidence. We had a tambourine-tastic time making some joyful noise together!

🧹✨ Our Cardinals class had so much fun during our Sweep It activity!
Using child-sized brooms and dustpans, the children swept small toys into different shapes created with painter's tape on the floor. This hands-on activity supported so many important developmental skills while keeping learning fun and engaging!

As the children gripped the broom and carefully collected the toys, they strengthened the muscles in their hands and fingers, supporting the development of the pincer grasp and overall hand strength needed for future writing and self-help skills. Sweeping also encouraged gross motor development by promoting balance, coordination, body control, and bilateral coordination as children used both sides of their bodies together.

Sorting the toys into the taped shapes helped build shape recognition, visual discrimination, and early problem-solving skills while reinforcing spatial awareness and following directions. We love creating playful learning experiences that help our little learners grow in so many ways!

🧣✨ Our Hummingbirds were delighted to discover colorful dancing scarves hidden inside the surprise box!

As they reached, grasped, and pulled out each scarf, they strengthened their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and early reaching abilities. The bright colors and gentle movement encouraged visual tracking, sensory exploration, and curiosity, while interactions with their teachers supported early language and social development.

Simple, playful activities like this help our youngest learners build confidence as they explore the world around them!

Our Robins class had a wonderful time exploring beans in the sensory bin! 🌱🫘

Sensory play with dried beans encourages children to use their hands to scoop, pour, pinch, and sift, helping to strengthen the small muscles needed for writing and other everyday tasks. As they explored different textures and filled containers, they also practiced hand-eye coordination, concentration, early math concepts like measuring and comparing, and built language skills by describing what they discovered.

Learning through play sparks curiosity, creativity, and confidence—and our little learners had so much fun exploring together!

Our Hummingbirds made Water Day a total splash hit — exploring sprinklers, cooling off, and working those big developing muscles while they played.

Infants use a surprising amount of strength as they sit up in a supportive chair: their core, neck, and back muscles are all hard at work helping them stay steady while they reach, lean, and track moving water. And when they play in the sprinkler, they’re not just having fun — they’re learning. They’re discovering cause and effect (“When I touch the water, it sprays!”), exploring temperature and texture, and practicing early motor coordination as they reach, kick, and splash.

It’s messy, it’s sensory, it’s developmental gold — and our Hummingbirds have been loving every minute!

Mud Day was a total hit this Monday! Our kids splashed, stomped, jumped, and slid their way through some seriously awesome gross motor fun. Nothing cools you off quite like a mud puddle — talk about a mud‑nificent way to beat the heat.

Our Robins have been busy builders, engaging in imaginative play as they combined magnetic tiles and play bugs to create their very own bug house! Through this hands-on experience, children explored creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration while bringing their ideas to life.
Using open-ended materials allowed us to scaffold their thinking—supporting their ability to plan, design, and expand on their ideas as they worked together. What a wonderful way to blend imagination with learning! 🏡✨
