This repetitive motion helps balance, coordination, strength, and muscle tone as it gently mobilizes the joints. In addition, riding and interacting with the horse fosters self-confidence and motivation. The freedom and independence the Riders experience through Chakota's programs act as a bridge to accomplish and lead to success in other areas of their lives as well!

🐴 Little Hills, BIG Benefits! 💚

Here in Illinois, our land is pretty flat, but at Chakota, we know even the smallest hills can make a BIG difference!

That’s why we built our own little hills! Riding up and down gentle slopes encourages our riders to engage their core muscles, improve balance, strengthen posture, and develop coordination as their bodies adjust to the horse’s movement.

Sometimes comfort doesn’t need words. ❤️🐴

It’s found in a quiet pasture, a gentle touch, and simply knowing someone is beside you.

At Chakota, our horses give so much more than rides. They offer friendship, trust, patience, confidence—and sometimes just a soft place to rest your head.

Moments like this remind us why horses are so special. They have a way of saying, “I’m here. You’re safe. You’re not alone.”

And that is a little bit of the magic we get to witness at Chakota. 💕🐴

🔨🐴 FENCE REPAIR DAY — WE NEED YOUR HELP! 🐴🔨

We’re rolling up our sleeves and tackling the entire fence line at Chakota! 💪

We’ll be walking the property and replacing damaged posts and runners to make sure our fences are safe and secure for our horses. 🐴❤️

🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ Many hands make light work, and we could definitely use some extra hands!

💛 October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month 💛

At Chakota, this month is especially close to our hearts.

Our sweet rider Addy, who has spina bifida, shows us every week just how much determination can come in a little package. Watching her grow, gain confidence, and enjoy her time with Boo is one of the many reasons we love what we do. 🐴💕

And this year, Spina Bifida Awareness Month has an even more personal meaning for our Chakota family. Our wonderful volunteer Ava recently welcomed her beautiful baby boy, Briggs, who was born with spina bifida. 💙

This October, we celebrate Addy, welcome little Briggs, and send our love to Ava and her family as they begin this new chapter.

To every individual and family touched by spina bifida: we see your strength, we celebrate your victories, and we are cheering you on.

The weather is finally cooperating! It’s time to do some fence work.

Saturday, September 26
8:00 to 12:00
Construct a temporary fence to split the pasture between the two shelters. This will allow access to one side of the pasture while the other side is being reseeded. The horses do not do well being restricted from the pasture completely. Let’s build them some room to roam while maintaining the pasture.

Tuesday, October 6
9:00 until done
Replace broken posts and runners along the entire fence line. The front was replaced after being struck by a vehicle this winter. Now we need to maintain the full fence line before winter weather sets in. The way seasons are changing overnight we want to get the work done while we can.

We welcome new volunteers who want to work with the seasoned volunteers.
