💙🐴 Thank You, Highland Walmart! 🐴💙

Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center is incredibly grateful to Highland Walmart for a generous $500 donation through the Walmart Community Grant Program! Support like this helps us continue providing a safe, welcoming place where our riders can grow, gain confidence, and experience the special bond between people and horses.

A special thank you to Lily for joining us for the presentation! She was welcomed by riders Beth and Addie, board members Tom and Barb, staff members Jennifer and Taryn, and Taryn’s son, Weston.

Of course, no Chakota photo would be complete without one of our four-legged stars! 🐴📸 Boo, Addie’s therapy horse, apparently understands the command “Say CHEESE!” 😁 Just look at that smile!

🐾🐶 Happy National Dog Day from Chakota! 🐶🐾

We may be known for our horses, but we know a thing or two about spoiled animals around here! 🐴❤️ Some of our Chakota horses might just be as pampered as your pooches — and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

In honor of National Dog Day, we want to see the dogs that rule YOUR house! 📸🐕 Drop a picture in the comments and tell us their name. Bonus points for the especially spoiled ones! 😂❤️

🐴 From Supported Rider to Independent Rider 🐴

For individuals with intellectual and developmental delays, equine-assisted services can offer so much more than time in the saddle. For riders working toward greater independence, every session is an opportunity to build skills, confidence, and pride.

Learning to ride more independently can help develop:

🌟 Confidence & self-esteem — Making decisions and successfully guiding a horse creates an incredible sense of accomplishment.

🧠 Focus & problem-solving — Riders learn to remember directions, anticipate what comes next, and make choices while riding.

💪 Balance, coordination & strength — Riding naturally challenges the body to respond to the horse’s movement.

🗣️ Communication skills — Whether using words, gestures, or learned cues, riders discover that clear communication gets a response from their horse.

❤️ Responsibility & independence — Learning to control, care for, and work with a horse encourages riders to take greater ownership of what they can do.

Perhaps most importantly, the horse doesn’t focus on a diagnosis or disability. The horse responds to the rider.

Watching someone progress from needing constant assistance to confidently directing their horse is about much more than riding independently. It’s about discovering “I can do this.”

And sometimes that confidence follows them right out of the arena and into the rest of their lives. 🐴💙

Our staff, volunteers, donors, families, board members, community partners, and supporters all play a part in bringing Chakota’s mission to life. It truly takes a village—and we are so grateful for ours. ❤️
