Family Support Doesn’t Have to Mean Giving Up Your Goals
One of my mom’s greatest gifts is hospitality.
She loves to cook. She loves to feed people. It’s one of the ways she shows love.
What I appreciate most is that this support didn’t happen overnight.
Early in my health journey, it wasn’t that she didn’t want to support me—she simply didn’t understand what I was trying to do. And honestly, that’s where many families find themselves. When someone starts making different choices, it can feel confusing, unnecessary, or even personal to the people around them.
Over time, though, something changed.
The more consistent I became, the more she understood that this wasn’t a temporary diet or a punishment. It was about stewardship. It was about taking care of the body God entrusted to me.
So when we gathered for this family celebration meal, there was plenty of food for everyone, and there were also options that aligned with my goals. I ate a large, satisfying meal. I enjoyed the time together. I didn’t feel restricted. I didn’t feel deprived.
I simply made choices that supported where I’m headed.
For example, I brought sweet potatoes because I wanted them as my carbohydrate source instead of the pasta everyone else was having. No drama. No guilt. No expectation that everyone needed to eat like me. Just a simple decision that helped me stay aligned with my goals.
That’s what healthy boundaries look like.
Not demanding that everyone bend to your preferences.
Not expecting others to completely change for you.
But knowing what serves your body, communicating when appropriate, bringing something if needed, and confidently owning your choices.
As the steward of your machine, you get to decide what you will and won’t fuel it with.
The beautiful thing is that when people see consistency, they often become more supportive. Education replaces confusion. Understanding replaces resistance.
Family meals, holiday gatherings, celebrations, and dinners out don’t have to pull you away from your goals.
They can become opportunities to practice them.
Because the goal was never just weight loss.
The goal is learning how to live.
Enjoying the people you love, sharing meals together, and honoring the body God gave you at the same time.
My mom is the best and my choices have directly impacted her life and God-centered healthy lifestyle journey.
Stewarding the body. Anchored in faith. Reflecting His glory. 💜
