Feeding therapy can get messy — and for good reason!

We can learn a lot by playing with new foods: texture, smell, taste, temperature, and more. When we allow babies and kids to explore foods without pressure to do it the “right” way, they may be more comfortable and motivated to try.

Adding color to yogurt and using it to paint suddenly feels fun, not scary!

April is World Autism Month.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental condition which affects a person's cognitive, social, and sensory skills. No two people with autism will be the same, just like no two people without autism are.
While many people with ASD can benefit from services including speech therapy, their goals and therapeutic approaches are tailored to their personality, needs, and strengths.
It is important for providers, teachers, loved ones, and community members to recognize the unique abilities and qualities of the autistic people in their lives to help support, include, and empower them!

The core word of the week is "stop"! 🛑
"Core words" are a small set of words that make up most of what we actually say on a daily basis. These vocabulary words are very important for early language development. Parents and therapists can support their children's core vocabulary by modeling core words in different contexts and creating opportunities for the child to use the word.

Opportunities to model "stop" include:
-Playing with racecars
-Finishing an obstacle course
-Playing a variation of the game Red Light, Green light, instead using "stop" and "go".

This word is relevant all throughout our day, in ways we might not even think about. There are many simple ways to expose your child to the word and facilitate saying it on their own -- easily 50-100 times in a day!

Ask your child's therapist for more ideas on modeling core words to support your child's language development.
