You may have heard about a rise in cyclosporiasis cases across parts of the country. If you haven’t heard the term before, it’s simply a stomach illness caused by a microscopic parasite (Cyclospora) that can sometimes hitch a ride on fresh summer produce.

While our cases of cyclospora in Arizona remain low, summer is peak season for this bug, and we want to share a few quick, practical tips to keep your kitchen safe. Because the parasite is usually found on fresh produce, a few simple adjustments to your food prep can make a big difference:

💧 Give it a scrub: Thoroughly wash fresh fruits and vegetables under running water. Use a clean brush on firm produce like melons, cucumbers, or snow peas.

🥬 Go whole: During the summer months, consider buying whole heads of lettuce or romaine instead of pre-cut packaged salad mixes, and remove the outer leaves before washing.

🔥 When in doubt, cook it: Cooking thoroughly kills the parasite. If you are preparing meals for young children, older adults, or anyone with a weakened immune system, sticking to cooked veggies and herbs is a great extra step.

What to watch for: Cyclosporiasis symptoms usually look like persistent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, fatigue, and nausea that can stick around for a week or more. If you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider.

Be sure to ask them specifically about testing for cyclosporiasis, as standard food-poisoning tests don't always look for it!

Stay safe, healthy, and hydrated, Arizona! 🌵💛
