🐴✨ Not All HA Products Are Created Equal! ✨🐴

Choosing an injectable option for a performance horse starts with understanding the product and discussing its potential role with your veterinarian. 🩺💬

MultiVisk™ Equine IV contains:

💧 110 mg of hyaluronic acid per 10 mL vial
🧬 An average molecular weight of approximately 2 million Daltons
🏇 An intravenous administration option that may be considered within a veterinarian-directed equine care plan

Why the details matter 🔍📚

Hyaluronic acid products can differ in:

• 🧪 Concentration
• ⚖️ Molecular weight
• 🧬 Formulation
• 💉 Administration considerations

Your veterinarian can help assess whether MultiVisk Equine IV may be appropriate for your horse based on factors such as:

🏋️ Training
🚚 Travel
🏆 Competition schedule
🩺 Medical history
🦵 Joint or mobility concerns

MultiVisk Equine IV is a compounded prescription product available through licensed veterinarians. Use only as directed by your veterinarian. Product information does not establish efficacy for any particular condition or guarantee a specific outcome.

Not all injectables are doing the same job, but they can all have benefits when used appropriately.

Legend. Adequan. MultiVisk. Gel-50.

We hear these names frequently in performance horses, and while they're often grouped together as “joint products,” the conversation is bigger than just injecting joints.

Maintaining a performance horse means supporting the entire musculoskeletal system: joints, cartilage, synovial structures, connective tissues, and the structures that are constantly absorbing the demands of training, hauling and competition.

So what’s the difference?

LEGEND
Legend is hyaluronate sodium, or HA, a substance naturally found throughout the body and particularly important in synovial fluid.

HA plays a major role in the lubrication and viscoelasticity of joint fluid. Legend is FDA-approved to treat joint dysfunction associated with non-infectious synovitis and can help improve the joint environment and decrease associated inflammation and lameness.

Depending on the formulation, Legend may be administered IV or intra-articularly.

ADEQUAN
Adequan's active ingredient is PSGAG, or polysulfated glycosaminoglycan.

Rather than simply supplementing HA, PSGAG acts on several processes involved in degenerative joint disease. It can inhibit enzymes associated with cartilage breakdown while supporting cartilage matrix and healthier synovial fluid.

Adequan is administered IM, meaning it is given systemically rather than directly into an individual joint.

MULTIVISK
MultiVisk is a compounded product line utilizing hyaluronic acid, with different formulations available depending on what the veterinarian is trying to accomplish.

Formulations include combinations of HA with ingredients such as lidocaine, dexamethasone or ketorolac. This allows veterinarians to choose an option based on the individual horse, structures being treated, degree of inflammation and overall treatment goals.

Because MultiVisk is compounded, it's also important to distinguish it from FDA-approved equine drugs such as Legend and Adequan.

GEL-50
Gel-50 is another hyaluronic acid-based injectable.

HA isn't just about making a joint “slippery.” It contributes to the normal function and quality of synovial fluid, helping support lubrication, shock absorption, mobility and the overall environment surrounding articular structures. That brings us to the bigger point, supporting a performance horse isn't JUST about joints.

Their bodies are constantly absorbing incredible forces. Tendons, ligaments, muscles, cartilage and joints all work together, and problems in one area can quickly change how another structure is loaded. These products aren't interchangeable, and they aren't magic fixes for soft-tissue injuries. But different injectable therapies can have a place within a much larger program focused on maintaining musculoskeletal health, managing inflammation, supporting recovery and keeping the horse comfortable enough to use its body correctly.

Sometimes that means systemic therapy.
Sometimes it means treating a specific joint or structure.
Sometimes it means rehabilitation, conditioning, farrier changes, rest or regenerative medicine.

The "best' injectable varies from horse to horse, person to person, vet to vet. What does THIS horse's body need, and what are we actually trying to accomplish? Going from there is where a program can be developed.

For educational purposes only. Injectable medications and intra-articular therapies should be selected and administered under the direction of a veterinarian.

🐴 MultiVisk Equine—explained for an 8-year-old!

Think of a horse’s joints like the hinges on a gate. They need slippery, cushiony fluid to move smoothly.

Hyaluronic acid, called HA, is naturally found in joint fluid. Healthy joints contain big, long HA molecules that help make this fluid thick, slippery and cushiony.

But HA isn’t found only in joints!

A horse’s body also has something called the interstitium. Think of it like a soft, wet spiderweb that surrounds the body’s cells, blood vessels and soft tissues.

This fluid-filled network is found around:

🐎 Muscles
🐎 Tendons
🐎 Ligaments
🐎 Skin
🐎 Blood vessels
🐎 Many other tissues

When HA is given through a vein, published research describes it briefly traveling through the bloodstream, interacting with cells and blood vessels, and moving into tissues and the interstitial space before the body clears it.

Big science made simple: HA is part of the fluid-filled network that helps connect and surround a horse’s hardworking body. 💙

Talk with your veterinarian about whether high molecular weight HA is appropriate for your horse.
