Brooke Healey would be 18 today. 💜💛

Even at five, Brooke had a creative streak. During one visit to Sloan Kettering, she became so absorbed in beading in the playroom that it was hard to convince her to leave. She loved dressing up, dolls and getting her nails done with her mom. Brooke found color and fun wherever she went.

Brooke was five when DIPG took her life after an eight-month fight. Since then, her family has built something powerful in her name.

The Brooke Healey Foundation has helped families manage the financial strain of pediatric cancer, funded research and worked alongside partners in the DIPG/DMG Collaborative to keep promising ideas moving forward.

Nearly thirteen years later, Brooke’s name is still opening doors for research and helping families through some of their hardest days. The Brooke Healey Foundation is a Visionary Partner in the DIPG/DMG Collaborative, and we’re proud to work alongside them as we keep pushing for the progress Brooke and every child facing DIPG deserve.

This is the first school year starting without Paxton.

When school started, Pax’s class surprised his mom with a book they wrote about him. 🥺

For so many families, the start of a new school year is a milestone that hurts. A new grade their child should be starting. A classroom they should be walking into. A first day of school picture they should be taking.

The Cure Starts Now was built by families who understand these days. If the start of this school year has been especially hard for your family, we are with you.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to remember the kids who should still be here, the kids wishing they could go to school, and the nearly 1,400 kids who will be diagnosed with cancer in the US this month.

Selina. Jimmy. Mallory. Rhett. Jade. Will. Elena...

Childhood cancer can feel like something that happens somewhere else. Until it happens to your kid. Your friend’s kid. A child in your neighborhood.

About 47 kids will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States today. That’s 47 names. Forty-seven kids whose lives are changing today.

We’re built by brain cancer families. We know what “rare” can cost: less visibility, less research, slower progress and fewer options for our children and loved ones. Rare is a classification. Underfunded is a choice.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. So this month, learn their names. Read their stories.

Because once you know the kids behind the numbers, childhood cancer doesn’t feel rare anymore.

And the need to do something about it becomes pretty hard to ignore, too.

Strawberries, tomatoes, trying flips, climbing, looking after little ones, being kind, and the smiles of others. ❤️

These are the little things that remind us of Mio and her beautiful spirit. Simple moments became treasured memories like when she made a cake covered in strawberries with her family. Mio was her parents' only angel, their proud daughter, and a girl who brought so much love to their lives. Mio's legacy lives on in the work that her family does with our CSN Japan Chapter.

Meet Aiden, a Medulloblastoma Warrior 💜

On May 1st, Aiden was named on the roster of Myers AAA u13 hockey team…
On May 8th, he was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma.

In one week, everything changed.

Over the last few months, Aiden has traveled to Chicago for surgery and proton therapy radiation. Through all of it, his family, teammates, friends, and community have been behind him 110%.

And so are we.

Welcome to The Cure Starts Now community, Aiden. It’s a community we wish no family ever has to join, but one that will always make room for those who do. 💜

Today, we are celebrating Chaaya on what should have been her 22nd birthday. Chaaya had an adventurous spirit and loved being on the go. Whether she was riding her bike, swimming, horseback riding, or traveling somewhere new with her family, she was always up for an adventure. She also had a huge heart for animals. Chaaya loved her rescue dog, Dash, and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian when she grew up. Chaaya was just 10 when she was diagnosed with DIPG, and she battled for 13 months with her strong and determined spirit.

But today, we want to celebrate Chaaya for Chaaya. The girl who loved animals, The girl who loved to travel. The girl who was happiest in the middle of an adventure. And the very loved daughter whose story continues to be shared through our Texas (North) Chapter. Happy heavenly birthday, Chaaya. 🩷

Today, Ayla Grace should be celebrating her 11th birthday. 💜

By the time she was 3, Ayla already knew what she wanted to be when she grew up: a space scientist. 🚀🪐

And that never changed. Ayla was fascinated with the stars and the planets. Which made sense to us. Ayla was as beautiful as the space she loved so much. She was smart, witty, and always kind. She could capture the attention of any room.

Ayla was diagnosed with DIPG in July 2021 and passed almost a year later.

Today, we don’t want her diagnosis to be the one thing you know about her.

We want you to know about the little girl who looked toward the stars and saw her future there.

Happy birthday, Ayla.

Ayla’s love of science and big dreams still move people to action. As a Cure Starts Now Ambassador, her story is part of the reason we keep pushing for better answers for children with DIPG/DMG. We could tell you how brave Addison was. But first, we want you to know how much fun she was.

Addison loved the pool, beach days and taking off in the family RV. She’d skip down the halls at The Cure Starts Now, then settle in with Minecraft and keep building the little world she started at the beginning of her cancer journey. She had a sparkling smile that lit up the room. Everyone who knew her understands why her chapter is named “Addison’s Sunshine.”

Addison lived with DIPG for 53 months before laying down her sword three years ago today. She traveled, laughed, loved fiercely and faced an unimaginable diagnosis with a spirit that made an impression everywhere she went. She also bravely helped push research forward, participating in three clinical trials funded by The Cure Starts Now. Her impact continues through the Indiana (Addison’s Sunshine) Chapter and through her family who continues her joy and kindness every day.

Today, we’re thinking about Addison the daughter, Addison the sister, Addison the kid who should be starting high school this year. There should have been so many more ordinary days and milestones ahead of her.

Every day, we still miss her sunshine. We still say her name. And we’re still fighting for the cure she deserved. 💛

“Elena’s lesson is not one of death and cancer; instead, it is one of hope and life.” — Keith Desserich, Elena's Dad

Those words have shaped The Cure Starts Now from the very beginning. Because before there was a foundation, there was Elena.

Elena had the kind of imagination and kindness that seemed bigger than six years could hold. She could disappear into books, lose herself in drawing, and pour so much personality into the little things she made, including the heart that would one day inspire our logo. She adored her little sister and took her role as big sister seriously, always looking out for her. And then there were the notes: tiny messages Elena tucked away for her family to discover later, little pieces of love waiting to be found.

Elena’s nine-month fight with DIPG became the spark for something much bigger. Her story inspired the creation of The Cure Starts Now and a promise to pursue the research that could change the future for other children fighting DIPG and other brain cancers.

Nineteen years after saying goodbye to Elena, she is still the heart of this work. The reason it began. The reason we keep going. And the reason a cure is possible.
