"A calorie is a calorie, day or night, it doesn't matter."
Except… it kind of does.
That advice ignores the hormonal shifts food triggers, specifically Melatonin and Insulin. Both play a role in weight loss and muscle growth, whether you're eating at noon or midnight.
Here's the science:
🧬 Insulin is produced by your pancreas to regulate blood sugar and move glucose into your cells. It spikes every time you eat.
🌙 Melatonin regulates your sleep cycle and circadian rhythm. It's produced heavily at night, when your body is winding down.
When you eat late, insulin rises right when melatonin should be rising too, and the two work against each other.
One late night of eating? Not a big deal. But making it a habit can disrupt your sleep, and if you're on a fitness journey, sleep is where a lot of the real progress happens.
Good rule of thumb: stop eating 3 hours before bed. If you're genuinely hungry, reach for something high in fiber and protein to help keep insulin levels in check.
Your hormones are always working. Might as well work with them.
