When did our sport stop being about the Dogs and start becoming about exclusivity?

I keep hearing that we need to bring more people into the world of purebred dogs. We need more families. We need more young people. We need more responsible breeders. We need more owner-handlers.

Then we turn around and create another “elite” event that divides everyone into categories.

Professional handlers.

Owner-handlers.

Breeder-owner-handlers.

The invited.

The not invited.

Why?

Every time we create another exclusive event, we create another line that separates people who are all supposed to share the same passion: the preservation and promotion of purebred Dogs.

Instead of bringing people together, we’re giving the public another reason to believe dog shows are nothing more than an exclusive club for insiders.

And where do preservation breeders fit into all of this?

The people who spend decades studying pedigrees, planning breedings, whelping litters, evaluating puppies, preserving breed type, mentoring newcomers, and dedicating their lives to improving their breed.

Without preservation breeders, there are no Dogs to showcase.

Where do owner-handlers fit?

The people who raise, condition, groom, train, and present their own Dogs. Many are every bit as polished, professional, and articulate as anyone who handles dogs for a living. They don’t deserve to be viewed as somehow “less than” because they choose to show their own Dogs instead of hiring a professional.

And then there’s the biggest question of all…

What about the Dog?

Isn’t the Dog supposed to be the star?

The Dog is the one being evaluated. The Dog is the reason any of us are there. Yet we continue to create events that place more emphasis on people, titles, exclusivity, and status than on the Dogs themselves.

We don’t need more division between professionals, owner-handlers, and breeder-owner-handlers.

We need to remember that every one of us is part of the same sport and should be working toward the same goal: preserving, promoting, and celebrating purebred Dogs.

If we truly want to grow this sport, we need to make it more welcoming, not more exclusive.

Because if the image we present is that you have to be part of the “elite” to belong, we shouldn’t be surprised when ordinary families decide this isn’t a sport they want to be part of. The future of purebred dogs depends on bringing people into the sport, not giving them another reason to believe they’ll never be part of it.

Here's my Vision...

I want to take a moment to talk about where Evermore Canine Services is headed and ask for a little help from our Arizona dog community.

The weekly Run Throughs are the foundation of what I am trying to build, but at our current attendance, they are essentially only breaking even, and I have not personally been paid for the time I spend organizing, promoting, and running them. For the Run Throughs to continue and be sustainable, I need to consistently fill the class with 10 participants.

If you have attended and found them valuable, please help spread the word. Share our posts, invite your fellow exhibitors, and tell someone who might benefit from the opportunity to practice.

Beginning in September, the Run Throughs will move from Monday nights to Friday evenings.

I would also like to expand our weekly practices beyond simply running dogs around the ring. If there is interest, I would like to incorporate things such as cavaletti work, stacking box work, focused handling exercises, and other activities that can help us become better handlers and better teams with our dogs. I would love to hear what you would be interested in working on.

There will also be a temporary break sometime before the end of the year. I am waiting for one of my Pointers to come into season and am planning a litter. Once the puppies arrive, I will take approximately four weeks away from the Run Throughs during those critical first weeks, and then we will resume. I will share the dates as soon as I know them.

But Evermore Canine Services is about more than weekly Run Throughs.

I have been involved in purebred dog sports since 1989, beginning with American Field field trials, and in conformation for more than 30 years. I have watched the sport change significantly during that time. As a breeder/owner/handler, I want to help support and empower other owner/handlers and breeder/owner/handlers by creating opportunities to practice, learn, and become more confident and competitive with our own dogs.

That does not mean we cannot learn from professional handlers. We absolutely can, and we should.

That is why I am excited that Evermore Canine Services has officially booked a handling seminar with Kelly Marquis for March 2027. I am also planning a pointing dog field seminar with local trainer, Guy Mollicone, for Fall 2027, and I am working to schedule a seminar with Dr. Carmen Battaglia in possibly January 2027.

My vision is for Evermore Canine Services to become an educational resource for Arizona dog people, bringing together opportunities for conformation, handling, breeding, field work, and more.

But for that bigger vision to grow, we need to keep the foundation going.

If you believe this is something worth having in our community, please help spread the word and help us fill the ring.

Somewhere along the way, I think we have lost sight of what a dog show is actually supposed to be about.

The DOG.

I see so many win posts thanking judges and congratulating handlers, while sometimes the DOG itself, the one actually being evaluated, seems almost secondary. At times, the DOG feels like a prop in its own win photo.

Of course, a talented handler can make a difference. Their skill in presenting a DOG well should absolutely be recognized. Judges also have the responsibility of evaluating the DOGS presented to them.

But at the end of the day, the DOG earned the win.

If we are going to recognize the people behind that accomplishment, should we not also recognize the breeder? The person who studied the pedigrees, made the breeding decisions, raised and evaluated the litter, and often spent decades developing a breeding program capable of producing that DOG?

The handler presents the DOG.

The judge evaluates the DOG.

The breeder produced the DOG.

The DOG, however, is the reason everyone is there.

When one of my DOGS wins, I want the focus to be on that DOG, its quality, its accomplishments, and the breeding program behind it. Ultimately, the championship belongs to the DOG whose name appears in the record.

It is called a DOG show for a reason.

Maybe we should make the DOGS the stars again.
