Mold exposure: The Immediate Immune Response (Allergies)
For the vast majority of people, mold spores act as standard allergens. When you breathe them in, your immune system flags them as dangerous invaders and releases histamines to fight them off.
This causes classic “hay fever” symptoms:
Sneezing and coughing as your body tries to expel the spores.
Post-nasal drip and a runny or stuffy nose.
Itchy, watery eyes and skin irritation or rashes. Respiratory Distress (Asthma & Irritation)
If you have asthma or a pre-existing lung condition, mold doesn’t just cause allergies—it can trigger a severe flare-up.
Airway Constriction: Spores cause the muscles around your airways to tighten, leading to wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
Inflammation: As shown in the respiratory diagram, mold can cause an irritated airway, leading to excess mucus production and inflammation. Over time, heavy exposure can even injure the cilia (the tiny, hair-like structures that sweep dust and mucus out of your lungs), making it harder for your respiratory system to clean itself. Fungal Infections (Invasive Mycosis)
This is rare for healthy individuals, but in people with weakened immune systems (such as those undergoing chemotherapy, living with HIV, or taking immunosuppressants), mold spores can actually take root and grow inside the body.
Aspergillosis: This occurs when a common mold called Aspergillus is inhaled and creates fungal balls in the lungs or cavities of the sinuses.
Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis: A severe, immune-mediated inflammatory reaction in the lungs that can cause scarring (fibrosis) over time with chronic exposure.
