Tis the season for PRUNING 🪚, Especially Oaks and Elms! Pruning these species of trees is best done in the dormant season to reduce the spread and infection of diseases like Oak Wilt, Bur Oak Blight, and Dutch Elm Disease. Also remember that new varieties of Elm's are RESISTANT, not IMMUNE to Dutch Elm Disease. It is good practice to err on the side of caution and have your Elm's pruned while dormant. You don't want those years invested into your trees to be spent on a simple mistake.

Now is the best time to prune them!

The trees are in dormancy and it’s an easier time to see branch structure – plus, pruning now avoids the risk of oak wilt infection.

Oak wilt is a non-native fungal disease that can be deadly to all oak species. It is spread by sap-feeding beetles that become active in warm weather. These tiny beetles are attracted to fresh wounds on trees (like those made from pruning) and can carry oak wilt spores with them from infected trees.

You can help stop the spread of oak wilt in Minnesota! Protect your oaks by pruning or cutting now. And please don’t prune between April - July, when risk of spread is highest.

What a fun afternoon planting 🌳! Thank you to the City of St. James for having us out to teach about Emerald Ash Borer and treatment options. The city is doing great things for teaching the kids about planting trees, and taking initiative in growing and diversifying our urban canopy in the wake of Emerald Ash Borer.

We have added an exciting and important tool to our Plant Health Care arsenal, the Air Spade! This tool uses compressed air to safely remove built up dirt from around tree roots. Exposing tree root flares mitigates early onset of root and trunk rot and allows for the removal of girdling roots that will lead to premature decline by choking off water and nutrient supply to the tree.

TREES, TREES, and....you guessed it, more TREES! This summer we are planting an additional 94 trees for the City of Welcome who are showing great initiative in re-establishing their urban canopy following the loss of their Ash trees. Welcome is prioritizing diversity and longevity with a wide range of tree species. Thank you for being a leader in the re-forestation efforts of the Midwest and partnering with us at Ahrens Arbor Care to tackle this project!
