Today I had the privilege of fishing Helen Burns, an icon that’s been guiding in the rich waters of the Rogue River for several decades. She brought a friend of hers, Diane who celebrated her birthday with me today. Helen is a joy to be around and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to local history surrounding our river. Not to mention a dam fine fisherlady too!!😉 We had a hold of three nice Springers today but unfortunately they weren’t willing to go along with our program ☹️ As we all know, you can’t get them all!! Diane had a great day as we had some local visitors that came by to say hi! What a beautiful day it was in spite of not bringing home a salmon. The joy that each and every one of my clients brings me is undeniable and I’m forever grateful. I’m looking forward to catering to you on your next adventure. I provide a personal experience with a two person minimum for the entire boat. You will not fish with folks you don’t know. The day will be yours and yours only. So if you are looking for a professional guide with personal service, please contact Rogue Pacific Outfitters. I am now currently booking fall trips beginning late July-October.

Tight Lines, Tony

Early mornings are worth it when you can put clients on Rogue Springers! Another great day for Rick Krogen who celebrated his 72nd trip around the sun with me and his boy on the ever so bountiful river we have in our backyard. The action was early and often which resulted in many adrenaline rushes but there was time for a brief nap while I was making up the next round of baits. Monday marks the day when we can keep wild chinook so if you’re looking for an opportunity to try your luck, give me a call!! There are still fish around if you’re willing to work for it. And as always, I hope to see YOU at the fish cleaning station!

What a great weekend spent on the Rogue River! Jen and Max chose to spend their day with me and we were not disappointed. Between all the wildlife we saw the salmon action was pretty darn good, resulting in two shiny footballs going into the ceremonial fish bag! Don’t get me wrong, we had to work at it. The moss is horrible with no time to sit and relax, at least for the guide that is😉 These two kids were on their honeymoon while staying at Tu Tu Tun lodge and took in the beautiful Rogue River. They spent Saturday with me and got to take home some of the finest table fare that swims below the pristine waters. Sunday they hopped aboard the Mail Boats while Brandon Mathew’s piloted them upriver for an excursion of a lifetime as they navigated 104 miles of untamed beauty! We truly live in a wonderful place and I thank all of you that travel here to support our local economy. So if you’re looking for adventure and excitement, you have come to the right place. Call Rogue Pacific Outfitters for a personal experience that you will not forget! With the rain this week, fishing should be pretty darn productive 😉

If you can pick moss and deal with the pesky squaw fish all day long you may be as fortunate as these fellas! Two bites, two fish almost sounds like a Dr. Seuss book Sam I am! Many of you may not know this, but Dr. Seuss and I share the same birthday. Along of course with that famous rock star Jon Bon Jovi! I know this surprises you but I can’t sing or play an instrument nor have I published any children’s books! However I have been blessed with the ability to be an outstanding recreational therapist and occasionally catch a fish!😉 As a matter of fact, that’s all a guide is! Taking folks out to enjoy the outdoors, getting them out of their daily routine and getting to know each other. That’s truly the best part of being a guide. But of course we are out there to catch a fish as well. I am extremely competitive, I’ve always been an underdog but at the age of 55 I retired from being the friendly neighborhood UPS man. I literally had to reinvent myself and started my guiding adventure. Nothing is ever given to us, we must earn it, including the respect of the folks that’s been crafting their talents for decades. My clients today were referred to me by Mark Van Hook. Mark has been guiding for over 40 years and and it meant the world to me that he trusted me to take folks out that he couldn’t. I truly appreciate that buddy!! Today I took out David Wagner and his two sons, Rod and Chris. We were blessed to get two Rogue River Chromers! It was great to see these fellas getting some recreational therapy at its finest. David and his two sons shared their day with me. David didn’t get a fish but he sat and watched his two sons crank in salmon with a smile so large that you couldn’t smack it off with a shovel! 😬Today we celebrated success and memories that will last a lifetime. These guys are “Top Shelf “ class at its finest men! They chose to spend their day with me and learn the “Secret Salmon Handshake”. I will be forever grateful. So if you’re ever in need of some recreational therapy and want to learn the secret salmon handshake, get a hold of me. Maybe I’ll put you in my book someday, On a train or a plane!

This flag flies proudly above my house and reminds of how thankful I am for all who is currently serving our country and all who have served in the past. It allows me to live freely and do what what I love. Every sunrise and sunset is uniquely different like the clients I get to spend my time with on the beautiful Rogue River. Don’t take a day for granted and get out and enjoy the beauty that has been created for all to take part in. Not a boat in sight today. Our own little private, peaceful section of the river. The sound of the rushing water tickling the bottom of the boat mesmerizes you as we take in the towering landscape that rises above the rushing river. Then……..ZINNNNG!! Fish on! After the chaos was over, we got to sit silently and bask in the glory of all that has been provided for us. Tomorrow is a new day, choose how you get to spend it. Get out and enjoy nature, be a good steward and understand that nature is not a vending machine. It’s a gift for all to relish…..Thank you Edwin and Ben for spending your time with me today. We were fortunate you were able to take home another salmon!! Appreciate all who support me……

If anyone is trying to figure out what’s happening to the declining salmon population in the Rogue River, go to the mouth and see for yourself. They hunt in packs, like wolves as the salmon migrate upstream. Low clear water makes hunting very easy for the pinnipeds. We live in a very fragile environment but balance needs to be maintained to ensure opportunity for all who seek the bounty of our rivers. Please share this post and good luck out there!

The last few times on the water has been some of my most challenging days when it comes to producing King Salmon on the the Rogue. However I’ve had the pleasure of spending my time with some remarkable people. I got to take Al Wighton and his brother Mike for a couple of days. Amy and I purchased our home from Al over 20 years ago on a handshake. Folks with integrity like that are hard to find these days and I will always be indebted to him and his wife Shiela for their kindness. I also was able to fish Kyle Gaines and his son Thorin. They are members of the Confederated tribe of the lower Umpqua, Coos and Siuslaw Indian tribe. Kyle is a gentle giant with an infectious smile and an overall great human being! He’s a gifted woodworker and also makes Native American handmade goodies that I was proud to accept and wear as a gift the next day when we went to the ocean.
Yesterday was time to switch gears as the weather was good and the ocean was flat. I took three clients, Rich, Mark and Kevin. We were able to connect with a couple of nice Springers not far off the mouth of the mighty Rogue. The ocean is abundant with balls of bait and hungry salmon. It’s only a matter of time before they make their migration up the river to greet the waiting anglers. As for now anglers need to make adjustments based on calm ocean conditions to take advantage of the bounty just off the mouth of the river. Always remember to be safe out there as the conditions can change rapidly and ocean can prove to be treacherous and relentless. I have a few available days in April but have lots of available days in May. Please call or text if you wish to book a trip with me. And as always, tight lines to all!!
I hope to see you at the fish cleaning station!
