Cornel West
I think about this pairing a lot, because so many of us learned one half from people who never practiced the other.
A man who was charming in the world and cruel in the kitchen.
A family that preached goodness to strangers and rationed it at home.
Tenderness without justice becomes selective.
Justice without tenderness becomes punishment.
Love asks something harder of us.
It survives the walk from the front porch to the dinner table.
