Living in a rural community, I see people struggle quietly all the time.

People are afraid of being judged.
Afraid of looking weak.
Afraid someone will say:
“You just need to pray more.”
“You need to toughen up.”
“Everybody feels that way.”

And sometimes people ARE just stressed and overwhelmed.

But sometimes it’s depression.
Sometimes it’s trauma.
Sometimes it’s anxiety that’s affecting every part of their life.

We have to stop treating mental health conversations like they’re all or nothing.

People deserve nuance.
People deserve support.
People deserve care.

The Major Richard Star Act is VJA’s fight today.

By Memorial Day, we are calling on Congress to fully sign the discharge petition and honor the legacy of Major Richard Star — a combat-wounded veteran who continued fighting for his fellow veterans while battling stage 4 lung cancer linked to burn pit exposure.

Major Star fought until his final days for the veterans beside him. The least Congress can do is finish this fight in his honor.

Mental illness is not a personality flaw.
It is not weakness.
And people cannot simply “positive think” their way out of it.

Conditions like:
• major depression
• PTSD
• OCD
• bipolar disorder
• panic disorder
• schizophrenia

…are real medical conditions.

Sometimes people need:
• therapy
• medication
• support systems
• trauma treatment
• lifestyle changes
• hospitalization

And sometimes they need all of the above.

Watering serious conditions down into vague “wellness” language can delay people getting real help.
