Summer is still rolling through, and here’s your reminder that your car can get DANGEROUSLY hot compared to the ambient air temperature, even in mild heat.

🚫NEVER leave Children, pets, or people sleeping in a parked car.

🚫DO NOT store your medications in your car. The heat can and will degrade them, even in a compartment or the shade.

🚫Sunscreen can loose efficacy in temperatures above 77° F.

🚫The rubbing alcohol from hand sanitizer easily evaporates, multiple hot days can render them useless.

🚫Electronics containing a lithium ion battery pose a fire hazard when exposed to extreme heat. Lighters or containers with flammable liquid also should never be stored in a car.

Your car acts like a greenhouse, trapping the heat from the light coming in through the windows. They can warm up 20° F over ambient air temperatures in just 10 minutes, and over 40° F in an hour. Keep you, your loved ones, and your car safe this summer.

OH time is running out! Back to school is around the corner. Send your teen off to college this year protected against meningococcal disease before it’s too late.

Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis that can cause lethal infection in the lining around the brain, meningitis, or an infection in the bloodstream called septicemia.
It can easily spread in close-quarters living conditions such as dorms. While the infection is rare, it can kill an otherwise healthy young adult in a matter of days. Infections will start with flu-like symptoms, such as a sudden fever, severe headache and stiff neck. Symptoms quickly escalate and it’s imperative that patients go to the hospital for treatment immediately. Those that survive through treatment are still at risk of limb amputation, haring loss, and brain damage.
The CDC recommends two vaccines to protect against 5 serogroups of the bacteria. One only protects for A, C, W, and Y groups, and one only for B.
Children typically receive the initial meningococcal ACWY vaccine at 11/12 and a booster vaccine at 16 years of age. Many teens have not received the meningococcal B vaccine. Talk to your doctor about what they’ve received, don’t assume and get them up-to-date!

We offer ALL of the meningococcal vaccines at Hart Family Pharmacy. We take walk-ins and scheduled appointments. In addition to our on-hand inventory, we can order in the exact vaccines our patients need.

There are well over 10,000 firework related incidents in the United States each year, with 3/4 of them being around our Independence day. No one plans for it to be their last day with 10 fingers, but it’s really not a choice. What IS a choice is how careful we are during this celebration.

Have water nearby. Either a hose or buckets of water, not just for emergencies but also to soak fireworks. Unused leftover fireworks, and used fireworks after they’ve cooled off for about 20 minutes, should be soaked before being discarded.

Only light one firework at a time. After lighting the fuse, quickly retreat to safety to view the show. At least 30ft away for non aerial.

Never try to relight dud fireworks. After waiting 20 minutes, soak and discard with the rest of the products.

Wear eye and hearing protection for safety, and also comfort. This will prevent ash from falling into your eyes as you watch the show.

However you choose to celebrate, do so responsibly and have fun! Protect yourself and others by being cautious. Happy Fourth of July!

Summer’s officially here! And for better and for worse, so will summer weather.

Make sure you’re applying your sunscreen and limiting sun exposure, especially during the most UV intense hours of the day (about 10:00am to 4:00pm) If you do get burned, here are some tips to encourage your recovery!

- Get the burn cool and clean as quickly as possible. As your body sends inflammation to the site of damage, it’ll also send heat. Take a cool shower or use a damp washcloth as a compress.

- Hydrate the skin with a soothing, water based product like aloe Vera. Avoid using Vaseline soon after receiving the burn as it can trap heat.

- Avoid itching as much as possible to avoid damaging the fresh skin.

- Drink water and stay hydrated! This not only helps your body cool itself but helps your skin stay hydrated too

If your skin has burned so bad as to blister, do NOT pop the blisters. Be very gentle when you clean them. Whenever you’re cleaning damaged skin, use a mild, scentless soap.

Take care of your health while enjoying the sun this summer season. Don’t let a sunburn stick around longer than it needs to.
