🐱🤖 Can a robotic pet help someone living with dementia?

A pilot program at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital is showing promising results. Patients with dementia who received robotic companion cats, dogs, or birds appeared calmer, more engaged, and less anxious during their hospital stays. Families and caregivers also reported seeing improved mood and interaction.

These lifelike robotic pets respond to touch with purring, barking, chirping, and movement, providing comfort and companionship without the responsibilities of caring for a live animal. Hospital staff found that the pets helped redirect attention, reduce agitation, and create meaningful moments of connection.

As research continues, innovative non-drug approaches like robotic companion pets may offer new ways to support individuals living with dementia and improve quality of life.

❤️ Small moments of comfort can make a big difference.

🐝 Bee Sting? Here's What to Do at Home! 🐝

A bee sting can be painful, but most mild reactions can be treated at home with a few simple steps:

✅ Remove the stinger as quickly as possible by gently scraping it away with a fingernail or credit card.

✅ Wash the area with soap and water.

✅ Apply a cold compress for 10-15 minutes at a time to help reduce pain and swelling.

✅ Manage symptoms with over-the-counter options such as antihistamines for itching or pain relievers for discomfort, if appropriate.

✅ Avoid scratching the area, as this can increase irritation.

🚨 Seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, or other signs of a severe allergic reaction. 🚨

Have questions about treating minor bee stings or choosing the right over-the-counter products? Stop by our pharmacy—we're here to help!

Not everyone will develop Alzheimer’s as they age. Though age is certainly a contributor, a variety of factors will influence an individual’s chance of developing the disease. Some things we can’t change, like age or genetics, but there are many aspects of our lives that we can adjust to improve our risk profile.

Our physical health is thought to be linked to our chances of developing Alzheimer’s, with conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart diseases increasing the likelihood. Lifestyle changes that help manage chronic conditions can decrease their influence.

Taking care of our mental health through enriching activities, individually and socially, in our later years is also supposed to decrease risk of cognitive decline. Isolation and staying sedentary fails to keep the brain active in ways that encourage its maintenance.

Drinking alcohol and smoking will damage overall health and specifically raise Alzheimer’s risk. Smoking will damage your circulatory and pulmonary systems, particularly to your brain, heart, and lungs. Alcohol will damage the brain in both short-term and long-term ways that impact cognition speed, memory, decision-making, and emotional processing.

🧠 New Research Spotlight: Lithium & Alzheimer's Disease🧠
Our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been rapidly growing in recent years, and so is our hope for possible treatment options. In 2025, researchers at Harvard Medical School transformed how we view the mechanisms behind the disease.

Their study found that naturally occurring lithium levels in the brain were significantly lower in people with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. Researchers also found that restoring low lithium levels in animal models (mice) helped reduce Alzheimer's-related brain changes and improved memory.

While these findings are exciting, it's important to remember that this research is still in the early stages. More studies, including human clinical trials, are needed before lithium can be recommended as a treatment or prevention strategy for Alzheimer's disease.

Research like this continues to expand our understanding of brain health and may help shape future approaches to Alzheimer's prevention and treatment.

🧠 June is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month 💜

This month, we recognize the millions of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

While aging is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer's, healthy lifestyle habits may help support brain health. Regular physical activity, quality sleep, managing blood pressure, staying socially connected, and keeping your mind active are all important steps toward maintaining cognitive health.

If you or a loved one has noticed changes in memory, thinking, or daily functioning, don't ignore them. Early evaluation can help identify the cause and provide access to treatment, support, and planning resources.

At Hart Family Pharmacy, we're committed to helping our community stay informed and healthy. Join us this June in raising awareness and supporting those affected by Alzheimer's disease.

💜 Wear purple this month to show your support and help spread awareness.
