🙋‍♀️ It’s official! Registration is OPEN for my FREE 5-Day Yoga for Beginners Over 50 Challenge!

If you’ve been wanting to try yoga but keep thinking you need to get a little stronger, more flexible, or more “in shape” first, this is for you.

You don’t need to be flexible.
You don’t need good balance.
You don’t need to know the poses.
And you definitely don’t need to get in shape before you start.

Those are things we build through practice.

Starting Monday, September 21st, I’ll guide you through five beginner-friendly yoga practices focused on the things that matter for staying strong, mobile, and confident as you age:

✅ Mobility
✅ Strength
✅ Balance
✅ Posture
✅ Flexibility

Each practice is about 20 minutes, and we’ll move slowly, build from the basics, and give you options along the way.

If you’re brand new to yoga, coming back after a long break, or have simply been wondering whether yoga could work for your body, I’d love for you to join me.

It’s completely FREE.

Comment CHALLENGE below and I’ll send you the link to sign up. (And share this with a friend who might want to join you!)

When I first discovered this pose, it caught me off guard in the best way.

The simplicity of it, and how it felt both during and after, was exactly what I needed.

Holding this shape can help calm your nervous system, inviting your body into a true state of rest. It's a chance to connect with your breath and let your body's weight settle fully into the ground beneath you.

Along with that comes a gentle opening across your chest and shoulders, which supports better posture over time.

✔️ No blocks? A stack of books works just as well
✔️ Hold for as long as feels supportive, there's no rush

Save this to try later - or better yet, just try it now! 😊

Your feet do a lot more for your balance than simply provide a strong foundation.

Your brain is constantly taking in sensory information from your feet and ankles about where your body is in space, then using that information to make tiny adjustments to help keep you upright.

That’s why I include foot and ankle work as part of balance training.

We want:

✔️ Ankle mobility so your body can adjust as your weight shifts
✔️ Foot and ankle strength to help create a stable base
✔️ Body awareness and proprioception so your brain gets better information about where you are in space

Balance is about so much more than strong legs or holding Tree Pose. Train the whole system!

✅ Save this one and give your feet and ankles a little attention during your next practice.

So…what happens when you actually start practicing consistently?

As a yoga therapist specializing in healthy aging, I’ve seen this again and again:

Your joints start moving more freely.

You begin building strength in places you didn’t realize had gotten weaker.

Your balance gets challenged, and you start getting better at responding to those little wobbles.

You become more aware of your posture and how you’re moving throughout the day.

And slowly, movements that once felt stiff or restricted start to feel more accessible.

But here’s the part I especially love: you also start learning your own body.

You learn what feels good, what needs modifying, when to challenge yourself, and when to back off.

That’s what I want for my beginners after 30 days. Not fancy, "perfect" poses.

A more mobile, more confident body, and a strong foundation for a yoga practice you can keep building on.

That’s exactly what we’ll be building in my upcoming 30-day beginner program.

So… how’d you do? 😄

Here’s the most important thing I want you to know about a balance test like this:

It's okay if you don't do it perfectly.

As a yoga therapist specializing in healthy aging, I’m much more interested in what happens when your balance gets challenged.

Did one direction feel harder than another?
Did your standing ankle wobble?
Did you have trouble controlling the movement as you reached?
Did one side feel completely different from the other?

That’s all useful information.

Balance isn’t one single skill. It relies on your brain and body working together to coordinate movement, control your joints, respond to changes in your center of gravity, and keep you upright while you move in different directions.

So if this was HARD? Good. You just found something worth practicing.

Try it again in a few weeks and see what changes. And remember: use a wall or chair if you need it. Support doesn’t take away the challenge , it simply helps you practice it safely.

Save this one so you can come back and retest yourself!

Okay, how long did you make it? 😄

Wall Chair might look simple, but give it a little time and those thighs will start TALKING to you.

That’s because you’re asking your quadriceps and other muscles of the lower body to work continuously to hold you in place.

And THIS is strength I care about as we age.

Strong legs help you stand up from a chair, climb stairs, get up and down from the floor, and control your body as you lower yourself down.

In other words, we’re not building strong legs just to be good at Chair Pose.

We’re building strong legs for LIFE.

And while the popular challenge going around uses 60 seconds as the goal, if you couldn’t hold it that long...who cares?

Start where you are.

Try 10 or 15 seconds. Come out. Rest. Try it again.

Then keep practicing and see what happens over the next few weeks.

Save this one and come back to retest yourself in a few weeks!

Most people think of posture as something you look like. Stand up straighter, shoulders back, chin up.

That's not why I teach it.

When the front of your chest is closed down, your ribs can't expand the way they're built to, so you take in less air with every breath.

When your upper body drifts forward, your center of gravity goes forward with it, and ordinary things like walking or standing up out of a chair take more effort than they should.

And the deeper muscles that are supposed to be holding you upright switch off, so your neck and shoulders end up doing work that was never theirs to do.

None of that has anything to do with looking taller.

That's what this week's episode of Yoga for Longevity is about.

Here’s something I wish every beginner knew about downward dog:

Straight legs are not the goal.

One of the things I care about most in this pose is creating length through the spine.

If tightness through the backs of your legs is causing your pelvis to tuck under and your spine to round, bending your knees can give you the freedom to send your hips up and back and find that length.

Try it:

✔️ Bend your knees as much as you need to
✔️ Send your hips up AND back
✔️ Press the floor away actively with your hands
✔️ Shift the weight more into your lower body and out of your wrists
✔️ Feel the length and space in your spine

You don’t need to force your heels to the floor. Your legs don’t need to be straight. And your downward dog doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

Learning what we’re actually trying to accomplish in a pose (and how to adapt it for YOUR body) is such an important part of learning yoga.

And if this is the kind of approach you’ve been looking for, I’d love to help you get started.

Join me for my upcoming FREE 5-Day Yoga for Beginners Over 50 Challenge, starting September 21st.

We’ll slow things down, start with the basics, and explore mobility, strength, balance, posture, and flexibility through short, beginner-friendly practices.

Getting up and down off the floor is a SKILL.

And like any other skill, it gets easier when you actually practice the pieces that go into it.

This movement takes your hips, knees, and ankles through a pretty big range of motion while asking your legs to support and control you as you move closer to the floor. Then, as you lift your hips and straighten your legs, you’re working on hamstring flexibility, too.

That’s a LOT of useful mobility packed into one simple movement.

And it’s exactly the kind of movement I want us to keep practicing as we get older.

Tip: You do NOT have to start with the full version you see me doing.

My mom (68) is demoing a couple of options here in the video. The blocks and/or chair help lift the floor up to you and make the hamstring stretch more easeful when you straighten your legs.

Notice the rolled-up blanket under her heels in the top left option. Elevating your heels reduces how much ankle mobility you need to squat down, which can make this movement much more accessible.

Use support. Make the range smaller. Start wherever your body can comfortably work today.

You’re still practicing.

As a yoga therapist specializing in healthy aging, I care much more about helping you maintain useful, real-life movement than whether you can perform the "perfect" version of an exercise.

If this is the kind of movement you want to keep working on as you get older, come practice with me!

My FREE 5-Day Yoga for Beginners Over 50 Challenge starts September 21st.

We’ll spend about 20 minutes a day working on mobility, strength, balance, posture, and flexibility, all with the goal of helping you feel more capable and confident in your body.
