I initially started HRT (hormone replacement therapy) for joint pain because I was developing frozen shoulder symptoms during perimenopause.

What I wasn’t expecting was how many other things I had slowly accepted as “normal” started improving too.

I started sleeping through the night again.
My brain fog started to lift.
I stopped feeling irritated by absolutely everything and everyone.
I didn’t need nearly as much coffee just to get through the day.
My workouts started feeling productive again.
And my libido came back.

Skincare for down there. Yep, that’s what we like to call vaginal estrogen.

Vaginal estrogen helps treat genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) by keeping vaginal and vulvar tissues healthy and moisturized. It improves lubrication, balances pH, protects the microbiome, and significantly reduces dryness and discomfort with intimacy.

Alcohol might make you fall asleep faster, but it doesn’t necessarily help you sleep better.

Initially, alcohol acts as a central nervous system depressant. You feel more relaxed, sleepy, and sometimes downright exhausted.

But as your body metabolizes the alcohol overnight, things shift.

Your sympathetic nervous system (“fight or flight”) becomes more active while parasympathetic activity decreases. Your heart rate increases, your heart rate variability (HRV) decreases, and your sleep becomes lighter, more fragmented, and less restorative.

This rebound in nervous system activity also contributes to those classic 2 or 3 a.m. wakeups where you suddenly feel wide awake, restless, anxious, or notice your heart pounding.

Alcohol also worsens dehydration, disrupts normal sleep architecture, and suppresses REM sleep earlier in the night, followed by more disrupted sleep later.

So yes, alcohol may help you fall asleep. But physiologically, your body is actually working harder while you’re sleeping.

If you’ve ever wondered why you can have a couple of drinks, fall asleep incredibly fast, and then wake up at 3 a.m. with your heart racing and your brain suddenly wide awake… this is part of the reason.

PERIMENOPAUSE vs. MENOPAUSE

They’re related, but hormonally, they’re not the same thing.

Perimenopause is often the roller coaster.
As ovarian function becomes less predictable, hormones can fluctuate significantly. Estrogen in particular may swing from high highs to low lows, while progesterone often becomes less consistent as ovulation becomes irregular.

That’s why symptoms can feel unpredictable too: one month you feel completely normal, and the next you’re dealing with breast tenderness, heavier or irregular periods, headaches, mood changes, poor sleep, hot flashes, brain fog, or just feeling “off.”

Menopause is different.
Menopause is officially reached after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. At this stage, ovarian production of estrogen and progesterone has declined substantially, so the hormonal picture is generally more consistently low rather than wildly fluctuating.

An easy way to think about it:

Perimenopause = fluctuating hormones
High highs. Low lows. Unpredictability.

Menopause = persistently lower hormones
Less fluctuation, but a new lower hormonal baseline.

And this is exactly why a single hormone level doesn’t always tell the whole story, especially during perimenopause. Your symptoms, menstrual history, individual goals, and labs all help us understand the bigger picture.

Hormone therapy should never be one size fits all.

Why should taking care of yourself mean going to four different places?

One provider for headache management and another for the cosmetic side of Botox. One office for medically guided weight management and another for hormone replacement therapy.
