Not the first time I’ve had a client say, “I didn’t know I was hypermobile.” 🤔

It’s not within my scope of practice to diagnose hypermobility, but here are a few ways I look for clues & symptoms of this connective tissue disorder so I can create a safe & effective treatment plan:

🔍 I look for common symptoms in my detailed intake form.
🔍 Physical assessment (testing for hypermobile characteristics is one of the 1st assessments I do)
🔍 I LISTEN… a lot of clues come out subjectively during conversation

The feedback listed in this testimonial image was given 6 days after our first session, here’s her story:

Treatment Goals:
address pain & stiffness in wrists & forearms, sensitivity to touch, chronic pain (TMJ & fascia everywhere feels ‘frozen’), wants to be able to work in garden & on arts & crafts.

Intake & listening clues:
Symptom chart had 12 body areas marked, all at joints, all listing ‘pain, weakness, tightness’
Occipital neuralgia
Joint pain & weakness
Poor posture
Bruises easily
Dizziness
Sits on one leg
GI issues, constipation
Can’t get comfortable to sleep
Falls a lot/ clumsy
Feels like she needs to pop joints a lot
Tends to throw back out when sneezing or coughing
As a little kid, wrists used to dislocate when parents held her hand while walking 👀

Physical assessment:
Beighton score: 9/9 (joint range of motion in thumbs, pinkies, elbows, knees, & spine)

Other ‘bendy’ areas:
finger tips, shoulders (said pops out of socket a lot - same with hips), neck extension (head almost laying on upper back)

Normally for chronic wrist pain & restricted mobility I would release adhesions & scar tissue and do active myofascial trigger point therapy (which includes stretching). This would exacerbate symptoms for anyone with hypermobility. 😬

Instead, I did a nervous system & vagus nerve reset, connective tissue protocol, & safely treated (and showed her how to find & treat) trigger points that refer to the wrist & arm.

Myofascial trigger point therapy & FSM are results-based therapies that can help improve many symptoms of HSD & hEDS.

Trigger point self-care techniques BEFORE an activity help:
🎯 relieve muscle tension & pain
🎯 improve strength & mobility
🎯 improve performance
🎯 prevent injuries & DOMS

My clients who treat their muscles before an activity report having more strength, endurance, mobility, and less or no soreness the next day.

A few examples:
🏀 a basketball player moves freer & easier on the court (ankles)
🥕 a gardner is able to plant, dig, & w**d without pain (wrists & elbows)
🚴 a road cyclist can do long rides without pain during or after (psoas/ hip flexors)
🧑‍🍳 an avid cook feels supported with less pain standing & moving around the kitchen for long periods (low back, hypermobility)

Neck, low back, hip, knee, ankle pain? Fascia is a continuous 3D web of connective tissue that wraps around every joint, muscle, nerve, and organ in your body - from your feet to your head. Restrictions in your foot fascia could be the root cause of your pain. 😳

Screening for hypermobile characteristics is one of the first assessments I do in your first session.

I also scan your intake form looking for the symptoms listed in this post, and others, such as bruises easily and joint pain/ frequent dislocations.

It’s not in my scope of practice to diagnose hypermobile spectrum disorders (HSD) or hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), but I can help significantly improve many of the symptoms with myofascial trigger point therapy & FSM.

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is more than just hypermobile joints. 💙

Most of the time that persistent pain between the shoulder blades is referral from the neck. 🦒

Releasing trigger points in neck muscles that refer to the upper back & adhesions in relevant tissues is often all it takes to relieve chronic muscle tension & related symptoms. 🎯

Often this is resolved in one session, like in this case. 💪

Myofascial trigger point therapy & FSM work by finding & treating the root cause, kind of like solving a mystery. 🔍

In this case, it was adhesions & trigger points caused by multiple head injuries & repetitive movements from a sport she played in high school. 🏋️‍♂️

When you treat the WHY, the WHERE often melts away. 👍

The zebra is the symbol of the EDS community for a few reasons:

🦓 “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras” is an old medical saying meaning to look for the most common diagnosis (horses) rather than a rare one (zebras). This leads to delayed diagnosis and often several misdiagnoses for people with EDS.

🦓 Just like no two zebras share the same stripes, no two people with EDS share the same set of symptoms.

EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndromes) is a genetic condition that affects the body’s connective tissue. This tissue, which supports ALL of your body systems & structures, are weakened due to defects in collagen production, causing a variety of symptoms & conditions.
