Peptides are everywhere right now, but what actually are they? Let’s break it down!
🧬 What are peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. They act like tiny text messages between your cells, carrying instructions and helping cells to communicate.
🏠 Peptides vs. proteins:
Proteins are long chains of amino acids that do big structural jobs like building muscles, enzymes, or antibodies. Peptides are short chains that act as signals. They don’t build the house; they send the instructions.

Each peptide fits into a specific receptor on your cells, like a key turning on the right lock. When it docks, it flips a switch that changes how that cell behaves. Your body naturally produces thousands of peptides, including insulin, many of your hormones, and growth factors, and they are found across nature too in plants, animals, and bacteria.
📉 As we age:
Many of the peptides your body naturally produces are not constant across a lifetime. Growth hormone-releasing peptides, collagen, thymic peptides, and several mitochondrial peptides peak when you’re in your 20s and decline from there, contributing to the physical and cognitive changes associated with ageing.

Insulin has been used in medicine for over a century, and peptide-based therapies have long underpinned clinical care. What’s changed is visibility. Treatments like Ozempic and Wegovy have drawn widespread public attention, and with it, curiosity about the broader class of molecules they belong to.
