18 oz PVC coated vinyl is the go-to weight class for gym mats, wall pads, and safety padding in schools and sports facilities. But not all 18 oz fabrics perform the same once they're installed and taking daily punishment.
After 42 years of partnering with athletic fabricators, these are the five criteria we always walk through with buyers before they commit.
✅ Antimicrobial treatment is worth paying attention to in athletic applications. Mats and padding in school gyms and sports facilities see constant skin contact, sweat, and daily wear, so the right treatment helps keep surfaces cleaner and better suited for heavy use.
✅ Fire Retardant certifications that match the application. NFPA-701 covers suspended or hanging fabrics like gym divider curtains. ASTM E-84 covers wall-mounted safety padding. CSFM T19 applies in California facilities, with more states and buildings adopting the same standard. Value Vinyls offers fabrics that meet all 3 FR standards.
✅ CPSIA compliance for any product children will use. If the application is going into a school, child development center, or rec program for young kids, phthalate and lead testing to CPSIA standards will be on the list.
✅ UV stability for outdoor or mixed-use applications. Indoor-only fabrics fade and degrade quickly under direct sun. If your application includes outdoor stadium wall pads, sports equipment covers, or awnings, the coating needs outdoor-dedicated UV additives built into the formulation.
✅ Batch-to-batch color consistency across orders. A gym renovation that spans two budget cycles needs vinyl from the second order to match the first. Tight color tolerance across production runs means replacement panels blend right in, and your work looks intentional.
We built our athletic vinyl lineup around these requirements. If your team is comparing fabrics for an upcoming project, we're happy to walk through the specs and help you match the right material to the application.
