45 for 45 🎉 | Day 2: Where It All Began

In the late 1960s and 1970s, people with disabilities across the country were organizing and advocating for the right to make their own choices, remove barriers, and have control over their own lives. This growing Independent Living Movement helped establish Centers for Independent Living across the country — including here in Michigan.

In 1981, Disability Advocates of Kent County was founded by people with disabilities who wanted to help themselves and others with disabilities gain greater control over their own lives.

45 years later, that same philosophy continues to guide our work. We work alongside people with disabilities as they pursue self-directed lives, while advocating for accessible and welcoming communities.

From our beginnings to the work we do today, Dave reflects on how Disability Advocates of Kent County got its start, our role in the community, our Home Accessibility Center, our test pilot program, and why the work of creating a more accessible world is far from finished.
