This October, AIM To Inspire honors Blind Equality Achievement Month by celebrating the voices, talents, leadership, and contributions of people who are blind or have low vision.

Our mission—Creating Access, Building Futures—reminds us that inclusion takes action. It means listening, making information accessible, and creating opportunities where everyone can participate.

We can each take a step:
• Add image descriptions to social media photos.
• Ask before offering assistance and respect the person’s answer.
• Include people who are blind or have low vision in conversations and decisions that affect them.

To our blind and low vision community: you matter, your voice matters, and you belong. Together, we can build a community with more access and opportunity for all.

I wanted to share a resource that may be helpful to individuals with disabilities and their families.

MiABLE is Michigan’s ABLE savings program, designed to help eligible individuals with disabilities save and invest money for qualified disability-related expenses while maintaining certain public benefits, subject to program rules.

Funds may be used for eligible expenses such as housing, transportation, education, employment support, health and wellness, assistive technology, and other needs that support greater independence.

At AIM To Inspire, part of our mission is not only creating opportunities—we also want to make sure families know about resources that can help them plan for the future.

If you have a loved one with a disability, this may be something worth learning more about and asking questions about.

📢 Important Social Security Disability Update

I received some information that could be helpful to individuals with disabilities, families, caregivers, and those considering employment while receiving benefits. I want to make sure our community knows about them.

Here are a few important updates:

✅ Social Security added 14 medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances list. This program helps identify certain severe conditions that may qualify for an expedited disability determination.

✅ New tools are available through your personal “my Social Security” account. Individuals may now be able to:

• Complete and submit disability forms online
• Track the status of a disability claim or appeal
• Review certain letters and evidence
• Receive additional notices and email or text alerts

✅ The Ticket to Work Program is a free and voluntary program for adults ages 18–64 who receive SSDI or SSI and want to explore employment. Services may include career counseling, job training, résumé assistance, job placement, and continued support after employment begins.

The goal is to help people explore employment opportunities without immediately losing the benefits they rely on. Because everyone’s situation is different, please speak with a qualified benefits counselor before making decisions about employment or earnings.

📅 A free WISE webinar will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 3:00–4:30 p.m. ET. The webinar will discuss common myths about working while receiving disability benefits, available work incentives, and the Ticket to Work Program.

I’m excited and grateful to share that I will be a special guest on the H.E.R. Healing Everything Revealed Podcast tomorrow!

I’ll be sharing pieces of my journey, the heart behind AIM To Inspire, and why creating access and opportunity for individuals with disabilities means so much to me. Every part of my story—the challenges, the lessons, and the purpose has helped prepare me for moments like this.

Some students are not failing because they lack ability.

They are struggling because no one has taken the time to recognize how they learn, understand what they may be carrying, or provide the support they need to succeed.

Not every disability is visible. Not every struggle has been diagnosed. Some students are quietly slipping through the cracks while being labeled lazy, unmotivated, or difficult.

Before we judge the behavior, we must look deeper. Before we lower expectations, we must ask better questions.

Every student deserves to be seen, understood, supported, and given a real opportunity to thrive. When we change the support—not the student—we may finally see the ability that was there all along.

Let’s stop asking, “What is wrong with this student?” and start asking, “What does this student need?”

They are not incapable. They may simply need someone who believes in them enough to discover how they learn.
