I know you guys love a good process video 👌

Start to finish of this little piece for November’s snail mail theme: “forest floor.” It features some species not normally found on the West Coast, but I thought I’d shake things up a little.

- cat skull
- virginia creeper
- peacock pansy

Painted almost entirely with my handmade watercolor paints. The bright orange is a pigment from , my favorite liquid commercial watercolor paints.

The paints I made myself for this piece include:

- local indigo (blue)
- madder root (red)
- grizzly peak (brown)
- sterling creek (black)
- light sea foam (indigo, malachite and calcium carbonate)
- coffee for the background

On watercolor paper (cold press), of course, the goat of all papers. 📝

Super fun little color realism piece for a lovely client of mine I’ve been working with for years! Thanks again for coming all the way out to see me!

This is a special piece, her all-time favorite hiking spot, that she wanted to hang onto forever. A place that always brings her peace and happiness. So, naturally, we took a snapshot of this serene location and encased it in a serotonin molecule, the happiness neurotransmitter!

Always a fun time and so happy with this little piece. Can’t wait to do more!

Making a logo: the Charlie way 😂

For some reason my brain likes to take the most tedious possible route and spend exactly 5,000 years making a hand carved logo but hey. I’m just rolling with whatever my brain tells me to do xD

I’m constantly making art and doing projects like this, so I thought, why not just record myself doing it? Gives you all a little insight into the behind the scenes of a professional artist.

This piece truly embodies what sets my work apart from just another tattoo.

I had the absolute honor and pleasure of getting to tattoo this piece on my truly lovely client. This piece was painted with natural watercolors I handmade myself from local plants and minerals. I feel deeply appreciative of the earth tones and color the world around us provides.

I painted this piece to embody a strangely familiar and aching feeling of having a heart you wear on your sleeve. You feel like you’re too much, say the wrong thing at the wrong time, too expressive. It feels like wanting to bite your tongue, chase your own tail, to shut yourself away from the world.

This piece captures that moment in time, and expresses not just a pretty image, but a real human emotion. A reminder of the ache you’ve been through, and the realities of being an open book. I’m so glad my client felt the connection to this pre-dawn design, and allowed me to translate it to skin.

I thought I’d share some of my paintmaking and wildcrafting behind-the-scenes moments with you all. A day in the life of a pigment obsessed individual.

We’ll start things off with an absolute failure xD So much of my paintmaking journey is full of failed experiments. But, the thrill of potentially finding a new dye plant overpowers my disappointment of unfortunately finding a highly toxic lookalike.
