After more than two years of erroneous Medicaid disenrollments, communication challenges and slow responses from state agencies, the nonprofits and companies providing developmental disability services say they are near a financial breaking point.

These two guys, one is a Ravens fan and the other is a Commanders fan. They both got to check out the game last night at the M&T Bank Stadium with their direct support staff. They had an amazing time. Go Ravens!

The bipartisan Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act urges the Office of Management and Budget to establish a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) for direct support professionals (DSPs).

08/07/2026

Every day, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live independently, find and keep jobs, build meaningful relationships, and fully participate in their communities. They are essential to making community living possible, yet their profession still is not officially recognized by the federal government. Tomorrow, August 6, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will consider the Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act (S. 3211), an important step toward giving DSPs the recognition they deserve. Take action today by contacting your U.S. Senators and urging them to support S. 3211.

For more than 25 years, the Olmstead v. L.C. decision has affirmed that people with disabilities have the right to live, work, and receive services in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs.

Recent announcements from the U.S. Department of Justice regarding its use of the longstanding Olmstead Guidance have raised important questions about the future of enforcement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

This moment serves as an important reminder that community inclusion and equal opportunity should never be taken for granted.

At Chesterwye Center, our commitment remains unchanged. We believe every person deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful life in their community, build relationships, pursue employment and personal goals, and exercise choice and independence.

We will continue to advocate for the rights, dignity, and inclusion of the people we support and stand with individuals, families, providers, and advocates who are committed to protecting these fundamental civil rights.

The Trump administration is tossing aside key guidance that federal officials have used to steer enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act for more than a decade.

Our July news is here! There is plenty to celebrate and reflect on. The Chesterwye Center announces new leadership advancements and appointments, we progress the construction of the Ringgold home, and we reflect on what a meaningful day looks like when things don't go as planned. https://mailchi.mp/chesterwye/july2026

Today was a very special day for one of the people we support as he chose to be baptized at Pentecostal Temple Church of Cambridge.

Our Direct Support Professional was honored to support him in attending the church of his choice and celebrating this meaningful milestone in his faith. We are proud to support each person’s right to make their own choices, pursue their goals, and practice the beliefs that are important to them.

We will continue to support him on his spiritual journey. đź’™
