In our last post, we shared a simple but powerful idea: good sitting starts with finding your sitz bones.

So how do you actually do that in a way that feels natural and relaxed?

Most people find that they need a little support at first. Something as simple as a prop under the back of the pelvis can gently tip the body forward so you can balance more easily on your sitz bones without gripping or stiffening.

Think of your pelvis like a bowl: you want it to rest in a slightly forward-tilted position, as if the “water” could spill softly out the front. Or imagine your tail naturally lengthening behind you instead of tucking underneath.

This is the essence of what Esther Gokhale teaches as stacksitting; using support so your structure can organize itself in a more upright, effortless way. A folded towel, a firm cushion, or a specialized support like the Gokhale Wedge can all help you explore this feeling of balanced, relaxed alignment.

The goal isn’t to “sit up straight” by effort, it’s to find a position where your back can let go while your bones do the work.

If you’d like to see what this looks like in practice, see the illustration below.

If you’re curious how this feels in your own body, start by experimenting with a small support under your sitting bones and notice what changes in your comfort and ease. Tell us in the comments below!

Summer is coming! Are you anticipating the warm weather to enjoy vacations, gardening, biking, walking, sports….but aren't sure your back, shoulders, neck, knees, or feet are capable of letting you enjoy these things due to pain or movement limitations? Now is the time to start your journey to healing your body through modifying the way you stand, sit, bend, walk, and sleep. Last summer, one of my students who didn't feel they had many posture issues sent me a letter after taking a class stating, "I've been applying what you taught and can spend time gardening without pain. I never thought that would be possible!"

At the Gokhale Method, our goal is to help people rediscover the natural posture and movement patterns that can support a more comfortable, pain-free life. Through simple, practical techniques taught in our course, students learn tools they can continue integrating into their everyday lives.

“Lang created a warm, welcoming environment for our class. We each received individualized attention, focusing on what was appropriate for each of us. The hands-on instructions were thorough… The course gave us critical insights into remaining flexible and moving toward less pain.” — Stuart

Thank you, Stuart, for sharing this Google Review! We couldn’t agree more — Lang has a wonderful way of creating a supportive learning environment while giving thoughtful, individualized guidance to each student.

Our Gokhale Method teacher, Lang, teaches both in-person and online, based in ON, Canada. She also teaches our Gokhale Yoga program and will be offering an alumni class in Wisconsin this August.

Did you know that how you bend is one of the biggest factors in whether or not you’ll experience back pain?

The way you bend matters. And when you learn to bend well, it can turn everyday movement into something that’s wonderful for your body instead of something that harms it.

Here’s a great example: Gokhale Method teacher Julie Johnson bending to gently pet a cat with an elongated J-spine instead of rounding, collapsing, and compressing, her spine is protected, her back muscles strengthened, and she enjoys a healthy stretch in the gluteals and external hip rotators.

We do countless bends every day; washing hands, picking things up from the floor, loading the dishwasher, brushing teeth. These moments add up.
:
This Posture Awareness Month:
Pick one daily moment where you need to bend (clearing the dishwasher, picking up toys, petting a pet, etc.) and take a brief pause to check how you are bending: is your back straight or curved?

When we get started sitting, a wedge is very helpful. Try out the Gokhale Wedge to assist you to get an anteverted pelvis. The Memorial Day sale is over, but you can still purchase it here: https://shop.gokhalemethod.com/uoiitl

Getting it “just right”

Elegant in form and function, our Gokhale Wedge is designed so it can be sat on four different ways. It not only meets your individual needs, but it can also adapt as your body changes on your Gokhale Method journey.

Most people use their Gokhale Wedge rounded side up. The slightly different degrees of curve on each edge give a choice of more or less angle to help tip the pelvis into anteversion.

Beginners, slighter people, or those with less natural L5-S1 angle, often prefer their Gokhale Wedge flat side up. They can choose a more or less tilted angle.

The Gokhale Wedge can give you just the right amount of pelvic anteversion for you at each stage of your posture journey.

Want to check what side works for you? If you’ve been on the fence, now is the time to make a move. Our Memorial Day Weekend Sale ends tonight.

Get yours now!

Sometimes, just a quarter of an inch of extra space in your spine can alleviate chronic pain.
That small amount of extra space between your vertebrae can be the difference between compressed nerves and discs, and comfort.
Many practitioners focus on symptoms (sciatica, stenosis, disc issues), but often miss the underlying cause that creates these conditions: loss of space in the spine.
We often assume that shrinking with age is inevitable. But in populations with low rates of back pain, one thing stands out: the spine tends to retain its natural spacing and length.
The encouraging part is that loss of length in the spine isn’t permanent. With specific movement and posture tweaks, you can create more space, ease, and sometimes even a return of height you thought was lost forever.

Do you sit like this?

Maybe right now, as you’re reading this, you’ve just become aware of your posture.

Shoulders rounding forward? Back slightly(or not so slightly) collapsing into a C-shape? A posture that often sneaks in during focused work at our desks. It’s incredibly common, especially after long hours of sitting… but over time, it can leave the body stiff, tired, and compressed.

This Posture Awareness Month, here’s a simple invitation: Pause for a moment and check in!

How are you sitting right now as you read this? Tell us below.

Awareness is where real change begins.
