They Tried to Execute Christa Pike—And She Woke Up

Tennessee attempted to execute Christa Pike with pentobarbital.

She became critically ill.

And then—
she woke up.

As a physician, my first question was:
WHERE THE HELL DID THE DRUG GO?

Christa Pike Survived Her Ex*****on. Then She Woke Up.

Tennessee strapped Christa Pike to a gurney and attempted to administer enough pentobarbital to kill her.

It didn't work.

The first dose failed.
The backup dose failed.

Witnesses heard her breathing. She complained that her arm was burning. And eventually, the ex*****on was stopped and the woman the state had just tried to kill became its medical emergency.

And then - while I was literally editing this episode -

Christa Pike woke up.

She's conscious. She's speaking. And now there are some enormous questions.

What happened to those IVs?
Where did all that pentobarbital go?
Could an infiltrated IV help explain what happened?

And perhaps the craziest question of all -
Can Tennessee try to execute her again?

This is one of the strangest medical mysteries I've covered - and underneath all of it is the story of Colleen Slemmer, the nineteen-year-old woman whose horrific murder put Christa Pike on death row in the first place.
