Shoulder pain is rarely just a shoulder problem — and this exercise gets to the real cause.

When the chest muscles become tight and overactive, they pull the shoulders forward. The upper back muscles — particularly the mid and lower trapezius — weaken from underuse. That imbalance limits shoulder exercises range of motion and creates the chronic discomfort so many people feel but cannot resolve.

In this video, I walk Glen through the banded scapula retraction. The band sits behind the shoulders at the base of the trap, hands clasped behind the back. The movement: let the shoulders fall forward, then drive the shoulder blades together and down — into the back pocket — for 10 to 15 reps. No elevation, no upper trap. Just clean mid to low trap engagement.

If your upper back feels chronically tight, your shoulder blades feel stuck, or you know you tend toward a slouch back and forward posture — this video is worth your time.

In this video, John Bl**er and Glen Gadwood at Function Thru Fitness in Green Bay, WI demonstrate a corrective breathing exercise designed to get air into the back of the ribcage — the posterior side of the body that most people never expand.

Here is why it matters: when the posterior ribcage is compressed and tight, the ribcage flattens. The ribcage needs to be rounded for the shoulder blades to glide and move efficiently around it. Without that expansion, shoulder blade mobility is restricted and postural compensation deepens over time.

The exercise is performed lying on your back with knees bent. A subtle reach toward the ceiling at about 3 out of 10 effort — not more. Inhale silently through the nose, exhale forcefully through the mouth. Because you are flat on your back, air is directed posteriorly into the back of the ribcage. At the end of the exhale, hold the side abs tension as you inhale — that tension is what maintains posterior ribcage control.

Two sets of ten. Less effort is better. This is corrective exercise for breathing mechanics and posture — one of the most foundational things you can do for shoulder blade mobility and upper back health.
