Another quiet moment of reflection on the Greenfield Squareā¦
With Halloween just a couple of weeks away, Iām enjoying the little spooky touches showing up around town. A ghost in a window, a few pumpkins by a doorway, a display that makes you pause and smile. Small things, but together they make our square feel festive and cared for.
Then there are the holiday productions, bringing familiar faces onto a stage and neighbors into the audience. People of all ages rehearsing together to bring theatrical magic to our community. Thereās something pretty awesome about having that right here in our small townāwatching people we know share their talents and seeing the generations come together to make something special.
Iāve seen what that can mean through my daughter. Being part of the Cumberland Rose Players has brought so much joy to her life. Watching her experience that big stage as a child, alongside people of different ages who share the excitement of bringing a story to life, makes me grateful she has this opportunity right here at home. Those are the kinds of memories a child can carry for a lifetime.
None of it happens on its own. Someone takes the time to decorate that window, learn those lines, organize an event, or open the doors. And someone else makes the choice to show up. Both matter.
Our local businesses are part of those memories, too. The familiar face behind the counter, a favorite treat, stopping into a shop and finding something you didnāt know you needed. As we enjoy their festive windows, I hope we remember to step inside, too. Shopping locally helps keep those doors open and our square full of life, long after the decorations come down.
It makes me wonder what this square looked like during holidays years ago. What did families look forward to? What traditions brought everyone into town? What little things seemed ordinary then but became the memories people still talk about today?
I imagine some of the best parts werenāt particularly fancy. They were simply things people could count on, year after year, with people they loved.
And it makes me think about what weāre creating now. Someday, these will be somebodyās āremember whenā stories, too. ā¤ļø
So join in where you can. Put a little spooky something in your window, attend a local production, shop our local businesses, bring the kids to a community event, or invite a neighbor to come along. You donāt have to do something big to help make our town a fun place to be.
What holiday tradition from Greenfieldās past would you most love to see come back? A favorite event, a window display, a gathering, or something I might never have heard about? Iād love to hear your memories.
Iāll be in the shop this morning from 5:30-10am quietly working, serving sips, and as always, reflecting.
