If you’ve done your research, you know that there are at-home and in-lab sleep tests. Aaand you’ve probably read that in-lab studies are more accurate than at-home studies. 🤨

This is technically true. Since you’ll be monitored during an in-lab test, there’s ultimately less room for error. 🤷

BUT ☝️ modern at-home sleep tests have a 90% accuracy rate. Many of them can now also measure most if not all of the same vitals that an in-lab study can. 😌

So unless you have a health condition that could be complicating your sleep apnea, you can take the test from the comfort of your own bed and be reasonably confident that the results are reliable. ✨✨

All of the scores on your sleep test are important and contribute to your treatment plan in some way. 📝🧐 AHI, though, is the one that most directly translates to your sleep experience. So let’s dig into it a little deeper⛏️

☝️ AHI actually measures two types of sleep apnea events: apneas and hypopneas.

Apnea is when airflow stops completely during sleep. 🙅

Hypopnea is when airflow reduces. You’re technically still breathing, but you are struggling to get enough oxygen. 🫁

So if your AHI score is 26, that means you stop or struggle to breathe about 26 times per hour of sleep. 🧮 Since 5 – 15 sleep apnea events is considered mild, 15 – 30 is moderate, and anything above 30 is severe, your condition would likely be diagnosed as moderate. 💁

That said, AHI doesn’t tell you how long each event lasts, or how they affect your heart rate, oxygen levels, and REM. 🤷 Your heart rate and oxygen levels in particular can impact your overall health risk, which is why they’re still important metrics for your sleep doctor to consider! 😷

As you might already know, in order to get a sleep apnea diagnosis, you need to take a sleep test. 🌚 The results are incredibly helpful for your sleep doctor, but they look like gibberish to just about anyone else! 😵

We’ll gradually go over how you can interpret your scores in the upcoming weeks. First, you’ll want to know some “basics” ✨

📝 Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) – This score reflects how often your breathing slows or stops during a given hour of sleep. 🫁
📝 Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) – How often the oxygen levels in your blood drops below normal in a given hour of sleep.🧪
📝 Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI) – The total number of sleep apnea events experienced in a given hour of sleep. 😴 RDI will include the events tracked by your AHI, along with other respiratory disturbances that can’t quite be classified as apneas.
📝 Arousal index – The average number of times you wake up in a given hour of sleep. 👁️
📝 Sleep position – Whether you sleep on your side, your back, your stomach, etc. 🛌 It might seem like a strange metric to track, but sleep positions can affect AHI.

Mother's Day is coming up, and you know what moms don’t always get enough of? 🙌SLEEP🙌

This Sunday, consider giving the maternal figure in your life the gift of a good night’s rest. 😌 Breakfast in bed is a classic – as long as you make sure they don’t have to do any of the cooking. 😉 You could also:

🌟Take care of the kids and put them to bed at night
🌟Schedule a relaxing message
🌟Buy a cozy heated blanket or a comfortable cooling pillow
🌟Bless them with the opportunity for a midafternoon nap

Trust us, they’ll appreciate it.😁

👂 You might’ve heard that adults need 7 – 8 hours of sleep in order to feel rested. Well, it turns out that getting enough sleep isn’t that cut and dry (go figure, right?🥴 )

Some people simply need more or less sleep.🤷 If you still feel unrested after the “recommended” 7 – 8 hours, you may need 9 or even 10 hours of sleep!

A sleep test and your doctor can help you determine the perfect sleep window for your unique rhythm. 😉

If you want to take the best nap of your life, you should know that there’s actually a science to it. 🔬 It’s important to time your naps so that they’re in rhythm with the various stages of sleep. ☝️ Here’s what experts say:

😴 20 minutes is perfect for getting rest without falling into deeper stages of sleep
😴 60 – 90 minutes is great for longer naps and getting some deep sleep, as you’ll cycle back to lighter sleep stages by the time you wake up
😴 45 minutes will have you waking up during deep sleep, which can leave you feeling groggy and even more tired than before!

If you can never seem to have a satisfying nap, follow these guidelines and let us know how it goes.🤗

So Spring is a lovely season. Unfortunately, with all the greenery and flowers comes a lot of pollen. 🙃 If you’re prone to allergies this time of year, here’s how you can help yourself sleep through the sniffles:

🤧 Shower before bed to take advantage of the steam and wash away pollen
🤧 Wash your clothes more frequently
🤧 Keep the windows closed
🤧 Use an air purifier/filter
🤧 Sleep with your head elevated

And don’t forget to pick up your allergy medicine! 💊🌿

Not many people enjoy their CPAP machine. 😅 No doubt it helps you breathe better at night and get some much-needed shuteye, but it can be noisy and difficult to travel with (to say the least😑).

Did you know there’s a modern, low-profile alternative?😏

Oral sleep appliances happen to be our specialty, and let me tell you, they can be just as effective (if not more) than CPAP! 😌 It’s more like wearing a mouthguard, which means no nasal mask, no tubes, and no noise.🙅 Just pure bedtime bliss.😴✨

Nearly everyone snores, so it must be a totally benign symptom, right? 🤨

Well, yes and no.🤷

Some people who snore have absolutely no issue with their airway – or their sleep quality. 💁 At the same time, sawing wood is an extremely common sign of obstructive sleep apnea. If your Z’s are loud enough to keep the people around you awake, you may want to get a sleep test!📝
