We believe good medicine means more than knowing what care a patient needs. It means caring whether they can actually access it. It means refusing to let “not covered” be the end of the conversation.

“Kinda chic to…” 😉

But honestly? It’s also just what we believe.

We believe healthcare shouldn’t always begin with a diagnosis first. We believe strength, muscle, balance, metabolism and longevity deserve attention before something goes wrong. We believe the technology used by elite athletes shouldn’t be reserved just for elite athletes.

And we believe our community deserves a place where prevention, performance and healthy aging all live under one roof. So…we built it. Kinda chic, right?

Welcome to The Laurel Highlands Center.

As a family physician, I have spent years caring for patients living with obesity. I see firsthand how often they blame themselves for something that is far more complex than willpower.

That’s why I chose to become board certified in Obesity Medicine. I wanted to better understand the science behind this chronic disease and offer evidence-based treatments that help patients regain their health and their peace…not just lose weight.

One of the things I hear most often from patients isn’t “I lost 30 pounds.” It’s “I finally feel at peace.”

They tell me the constant food noise has quieted. They aren’t consumed by guilt after every meal or anxiety about the next one. They feel in control of their choices instead of controlled by cravings. And what fills that space instead?

Time with family.
Energy to move.
Confidence.
Joy.
Freedom.

That’s why I’m passionate about this work. For me, it’s about helping people get their lives back.

It’s already August 1. Where has summer gone?

It feels like yesterday we were student athletes…nervous about tryouts, counting down the days until the school year/season began, moving into dorms, meeting new teammates, grueling workouts.

Long practices.
Early mornings.
Road trips.
Championships.
Injuries.
Comebacks.
Friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

Those years shaped us in so many ways. Today, as physicians, we’re passionate about helping the next generation of athletes build strong bodies…not just for their next season but for a lifetime of health.

Whether you’re heading into your first high school season or your final college season, understanding your body is one of the greatest investments you can make in your performance and your future.

POV: You’re preparing for your Netflix documentary… 🎬😂

Meanwhile, in the last 3 months:

Sleep? Minimal.

If there’s ever a documentary, the theme will be “Sometimes the biggest leaps of faith happen all at once.” (Supporting themes: little sleep/lots of coffee/zero regrets.)

In the last three months, Dr. Courtney has:
✔️ Left a job she’d loved for years.
✔️ Welcomed baby #5.
✔️ Started building The Laurel Highlands Center.
✔️ Began training for another half marathon.

People see the highlight reel. They don’t always see the early mornings, late nights, uncertainty or the courage it takes to bet on yourself. It’s been exhausting. It’s been exciting. It’s been a little bit crazy. And we’re just getting started!

Here’s to big dreams, even bigger reasons to chase them and to building something that matters. 🤍

Medicine should never begin with judgment. It should begin with understanding. Obesity is one of the most misunderstood chronic medical conditions we treat.

Like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma or heart disease, it has complex biological, genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. Obesity is not simply about willpower, and it is not a reflection of someone’s character.

Every patient deserves the opportunity to have an honest conversation with a physician—without shame, embarrassment or fear of being judged. Sometimes the best treatment is nutrition. Sometimes it’s exercise. Sometimes it’s behavioral change. Sometimes it’s medication. (And often, it’s a thoughtful combination of all of the above.)

At The Laurel Highlands Center, we believe healthcare should be rooted in evidence, compassion and partnership. We’re here to listen first. Because every person deserves a plan that’s built around them. Not around stigma.

The goal isn’t to convince someone to take medication. The goal is to make sure no one avoids seeking medical care because they were afraid of being judged. 🤍

Obesity is a chronic disease deserving of evidence-based medical care. It’s not a personal failure.

We welcome today’s news from the World Health Organization supporting the use of GLP-1 medications for appropriate patients with obesity.

At the Laurel Highlands Center, we believe the best outcomes come from physician-guided care that combines medication, nutrition, movement, muscle preservation and long-term lifestyle change.

Because lasting health is about more than losing weight…it’s about improving your healthspan.
