🌶️🧬 Did you know the compound that gives chili peppers their heat is being studied for its effects on melanoma cells?
That compound is capsaicin.
Capsaicin activates TRPV1, a receptor best known for detecting heat and pain, but researchers have also found that this signaling pathway can influence how cells respond to stress.
In laboratory studies, capsaicin has been shown to interfere with certain cancer-cell survival pathways and promote apoptosis — the programmed cell-death process the body uses to eliminate damaged or abnormal cells.
This is especially interesting in melanoma, because melanoma cells can develop mechanisms that help them resist normal signals telling them to die.
Researchers have also studied capsaicin’s effects on:
• oxidative stress
• mitochondrial function
• cellular signaling
• cancer-cell survival pathways
• programmed cell death
The fascinating part? The same molecule responsible for the burning sensation of a chili pepper can interact with receptors and pathways researchers are investigating as potential targets in melanoma.
⚠️ This research is still primarily laboratory/preclinical. It does not mean eating chili peppers treats or cures melanoma.
But it’s another incredible example of how naturally occurring compounds in foods can interact with complex processes inside our cells.
