There are moments in life that don’t make sense no matter how many times you replay them. This is one of those moments. (Please share if you would.)
On Wednesday, January 26th, my dear friend—someone who is truly family to me—Crystal Freas lost her husband, Alex, suddenly and tragically. Alex was only 40 years old. A husband. A father. A son. A friend. A good man.
Three years ago, Alex’s job with Shaw Industries moved their family to South Carolina. This past week, he was temporarily back in Alabama, working at the Andalusia Shaw plant and staying with his mother. He was only supposed to be here for one week—just a short visit—before returning home to Crystal and their two children. Instead, in the early morning hours of January 26th, their world stopped.
Because Alex’s death was completely unexpected, an autopsy was requested—something any family would want in the face of a sudden loss. Unfortunately, this means his death certificate will not be issued for at least 90 days. Until then, any life insurance or survivor benefits cannot even be applied for.
Crystal is now facing the unimaginable: grieving the love of her life while trying to hold everything together for their children. Their son, Declan, has just begun his freshman year of college. Their daughter, Piper, is only 10 years old. Crystal has been a stay-at-home mother, building her life around her family—a life that has now been turned upside down in an instant.
And as if this loss alone weren’t enough, the hits keep coming. In the midst of this tragedy, while Crystal’s sister drove her to Alabama after receiving the news, a friend was bringing Crystal’s vehicle down separately—only for it to break down along the way. Now, while trying to survive the worst nightmare of her life, Crystal is also left without reliable transportation. It’s the old adage no one wants to live through: when it rains, it pours.
Funeral expenses still have to be paid. Bills in South Carolina continue—mortgage, utilities, groceries, college expenses—as if this nightmare never happened. Life doesn’t pause, even when your world shatters.
If you know Crystal and Alex, you know this without question: they would give the shirts off their backs to help anyone. They lived that way. They showed up. They loved deeply and generously. Now, for the first time, Crystal needs her community to show up for her.
With her consent, I am setting up a donation link, with 100% of all proceeds going directly to Crystal and her children—to help bridge this impossible gap while they wait for answers, grieve their loss, and try to find their footing in a future that suddenly feels unrecognizable.
If you are able to give, please know that your kindness will make a real, tangible difference during one of the hardest seasons a family can face. And if you’re not in a position to donate, please lift Crystal, Declan, and Piper up in prayer—for comfort, strength, peace, and provision as they navigate a new normal that no one should ever have to accept.
Thank you for loving this family the way Alex always loved others—without hesitation and without condition.
