Lessons from My Mother’s Final Weeks

In her last chapter, my mother showed me what it means to die with grace. She faced the end with calm, anticipation, and faith — eager to meet the Jesus and Mary she had leaned on all her life.

Those weeks were a masterclass: acknowledge what’s coming, follow their lead, honor what they love, pay attention to the setting, trust the caregivers, and never be stingy with “I love you.”

Her final gift was a letter reminding us not to mourn, but to celebrate a life well-lived. For 68 years, she was my witness. I am her daughter. I am taking notes.

My mother passed away last month at 92. Though she lived with chronic illness, she carried herself with remarkable strength — always smiling, always moving forward.

Her life was layered and complex: teacher, compass, chauffeur, strategist, and eventually someone I supported more than she supported me. She never lost her love of people, her FOMO, or her style — pink champagne and Italian pastries at the ready.

Her final weeks were the most profound. Freed from worries, she simply received the love she had given so generously all her life. She said goodbye with grace few achieve.
