Recognize the signs of a substance use disorder (SUD). You might be able to help someone.

Here are some signs to look for:
• Having a strong desire or urge to use the substance.
• Giving up social, occupational or recreational activities.
• Unsuccessful efforts to cut down on or manage substance use.
• Using substances again and again, even when it puts someone in danger.

Signs can vary from person to person.

Are you able to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose? If someone you know is an opioid user, you may want to read this.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest to look for the following signs:

• Unresponsiveness or difficulty to awaken.
• Slow or shallow breathing or struggling to breath.
• Choking sounds or gurgling/snoring noises.
• Discolored skin (especially in nails or lips).
• Small, constricted "pinpoint pupils" (don't react to light).

The signs can be difficult to identify, but it’s important to remember them. If you’re unsure on how to proceed, call 911 immediately.

Diversion is when an Rx drug is obtained or used by someone other than the person for whom it was prescribed, or for purposes not intended by the prescriber (such as recreation, addiction, or financial gain).

🔹SAMHSA reported diversion is often how youth initiate use of illicit substances.
🔹Adolescents and young adults are 5.6X more likely to acquire drugs from their social circles and family than from drug dealers.
