In the early years of tattooing, tradesmen took great pride in gatekeeping their materials, pigments, and designs. Supplies were scarce, and access to quality equipment was limited. One of the earliest and largest companies to cater specifically to tattoo artists was founded by Percy Waters in Detroit around 1920.
Waters left Alabama in 1917 and traveled to New York City, where he spent time with the famous tattooer Charles Wagner. In 1929, Waters received a U.S. patent for his tattoo machine inventions, and his company went on to set the standards that many later suppliers would follow.

Percy Waters’ flash sheets were commonly printed using cost-effective blueprint, or cyanotype, processes, making tattoo designs more widely available to working tattooers of the era.
