Wonders of Sassafras!

I have seen it work wonders for a sty in the eye. Either boil the leaves or bark into a tea end rinse the eye daily for a couple of days.

SASSAFRAS ….

Sassafras trees grow from 9–35 metres (30–115 feet) tall with many slender sympodial branches and smooth, orange-brown bark or yellow bark. All parts of the plants are fragrant. The species are unusual in having three distinct leaf patterns on the same plant: unlobed oval, bilobed (mitten-shaped), and trilobed (three-pronged)

Although the plant has been labeled as carcinogenic , some studies suggest you could never ingest enough to cause it as it would take something like 30 traditional root beers a day .
This is because of the safrole content in the plant which has been suggested cause to liver damage and cancer
in fact, this is how root beer gets its name, but root beers no longer contain actual Sassafras or may contain the distilled portion of it.

Truth be told that study involved lab rats being injected with large amounts of it 60 plus years ago .

Simultaneously it’s also being looked at as a cancer killer.
The leaves are powdered and turned into a thickener called File , a staple in Cajun cuisine
Aside from traditional root beers and thinkehers , some of the traditional known uses are as a

Who remembers this soap from the 60's?
I loved it as a kid!

Too bad it was so dangerous. Makes you wonder how many other toys (and I know it wan not just a few) exposed us to chemicals that made us sicker as a generation? It reminds me how careful we need to be of toys and other chemicals we bring into our home. Including all the scented candles, lysol and fabreeze and other room sprays, perfumes and more.

Fuzzy Wuzzy soap was discontinued due to health concerns after it was discovered that its magical "growing fur" was actually mold (Cladosporium). The mold caused allergic reactions, aggravated asthma, and led to a child in Pennsylvania being hospitalized after eating the fuzzy coating, ultimately prompting officials to pull the product. The quirky, vintage 1960s bath product (produced by the Aerosol Corporation of America) was designed as a fun way to get kids into the tub. When the soap was exposed to air and got wet, effervescence caused it to crystallize and grow a fuzzy coating. Once the soap was entirely used up, a small plastic toy prize was revealed in the center. However, as users quickly discovered, that "safe cosmetic ingredient" used to grow the fuzz was actually a common household fungus that thrived in the humid bathroom environment. Because of the mold's connection to respiratory issues and the severe hazard of a child swallowing the fungus, the nostalgic novelty was removed from store shelves. For more details on vintage toys and nostalgic bath fads of the 1960s, you can explore discussions on the Reddit r/GenX or Reddit r/nostalgia threads. If you are interested in vintage childhood products, let me know if you’d like to explore the history of other nostalgic bath items or toys from that era!
