Question 1: What does a physical therapist do?
* Evaluates patients, provides education on injury prevention and rehabilitation, develops a personalized treatment plan, and continuously reassesses progress to ensure maximum recovery and a safe return to activity.
Question 2: How many physical therapy sessions do I need?
* As many physical therapists famously say, “It depends!” Many factors influence the number of sessions you may need. These factors include the severity and duration of your symptoms, your desired activity level, surgical precautions, other health conditions, and life circumstances, among many others.
Question 3: Will physical therapy hurt?
* Severe pain is not expected during therapy, although some discomfort may occur at times. Your therapist will work closely with you to determine the appropriate level of discomfort versus pain and adjust treatment accordingly.
Question 4: What can I expect at my first physical therapy appointment?
* During your first appointment, your physical therapist will discuss the reason for your visit, perform various tests and measurements to establish a baseline, and then review their findings with you. Together, you will discuss the recommended plan of care and upcoming treatments.
Question 5: What should I wear to my appointment?
* Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. If applicable, choose clothing that allows the area being treated to be easily exposed. This helps us perform hands-on treatment, apply modalities, provide exercise instruction, and observe muscle activation more effectively.
