Ok, I TOTALLY understand the appeal of making these action figures 😆 I love staying on top of music, fashion, & trends, but one thing that I won’t jump on are fad weight loss trends. Today it’s Ozwmpic. I remember as a kid Fen-Phen or Meredia were the drugs people went crazy for. There was also this trend where girls would eat cotton balls soaked in olive oil because the oil supposedly gave the body enough nutrients to make the body think it wasn’t starving. The biggest issue with this is they are not things you can maintain doing/taking forever, so as soon as one stops, the weight comes back, and sometimes even worse than before said diet. If you are really looking to lose and keep weight off, your body needs a well balanced diet, some movement, hydration, and above all, consistency. It is not an easy thing to stay consistent. I know we all fall out of routine from time to time, but don’t beat yourself up. If you have more good days than bad, you are well on your way to creating that healthy lifestyle!

Speaking on falling out, if you want to grab that ice cream or chocolate bar, don’t deprive yourself, but rather try to limit your consumption. There is this psychological thing that happens when you deprive yourself of something… most often, this leads to what is called the “Scarcity Mindset,” which is defined as a way of thinking that focuses on what you lack rather than what you have. As per recovery.org, this can typically lead to what is called the binge/restrict cycle, which sounds exactly like its namesake. First you restrict yourself from what you want until you can’t help yourself. Your mind focuses on what you miss which leads to binging of said item.

The important take away I would like you to get from my rant is that consistency is key. Find a method that works for you and stick to it! If something is too good to be true or you are losing more than 4-8 lbs a month, you might want to question the other effects your “diet” may cause. As always, do your best and if there are questions I can answer to help you get you to your health goals, I’m here ❤️

I went on vacation at the end of the year and came back the second week of January. During vacation, I stayed active; think lots of outdoor activities, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, I even did a couple sunrise yoga sessions. The week I came back, I had a doctor’s appointment which, of course, required me to step on a scale. If you know me or have worked with me you know, I HATE scales. As in the past, seeing my “number” sent me into self-deprecating thought patterns and guilt over my vacation behaviors (I am not much of a drinker but I was on vacation 🙈) and my sweet tooth was in full force. Anyway, I had to remind myself about the lessons I share with my students: Progress takes time. Falling backward does not mean you need to give up. Your weight is just a number. You should think more about how healthy you feel, how your clothes fit, how strong you are. This is 155 pounds of me and I am proud.

Y’all. I know it’s few and far between my posts, so first off, thank you for your continued support here! Slow and with control. It’s a prompt I give often in class because it is so important! Moving through your movements with attention and deep focus help you to create that mind/body connection and become more in-tune with what is going on internally (this also helps you avoid injury!)

Slow and with control does not just pertain to everyday movements, but also long term goals. If you have been working with me for a while, you probably know that one of my goals is to fine tune my body shape. If you swipe, the picture on the left was from 2017. At the time, I was working on slimming down postpartum after my second cesarean. My next goal was to b***y build. Fast forward to the picture on the right taken this morning.

With diligence and perseverance, I have been building muscle and can say I am 🤏🏼 that much closer to my body goals 💪🏽. If you’ve fallen off the fitness wagon, don’t distress! Today is a new day and there is never a better time to start than now. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day! Stay active my friends ❤️

Today is my birthday! In my many revolutions around the sun, one of my biggest challenges has been finding balance; balance between work/home, balance on the mat, balance of time and energy, balance between my healthy and unhealthy eating habits. My birthday challenge for you is to test YOUR balance! Where do your imbalance lie? How can you improve? Do you want to improve? Maybe your struggle is balancing your core self with your ideal self. In any case, I ask that you look inward and look for growth wherever possible.

I have reached 100 followers! This may not seem huge, but for someone who hasn’t really worked on building a FB presence, I am overjoyed at this achievement 🙏🏽 thank you to everyone who has trusted me with their bodies in real life and those who learned anything from me through posts. I look forward to continuing my own education and sharing my knowledge with all of you 🧘🏽‍♀️

Savasana, is probably one of the most underrated asanas in yoga for many practitioners. At the end of every session I’ve ever taught, I try to give at least 2 minutes to allow time for one final one before leaving the meditative space and here is why:

Throughout the duration of class, you perform a series of muscle contractions. Strong muscle contractions require an intense number of nerve impulses to command muscle fibers to shorten (Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, 2018), your heart rate is elevated, your breathing may be rapid; in essence, your sympathetic nervous system is in full swing. Savasana requires little to no nerve impulses to fire, allowing the body to experience total release which in turn helps release stress and muscle tension. The parasympathetic nervous system is activated allowing the body temperature to drop, & heart rate & breath to return to homeostasis (EK Heart Yoga, 2023). Our musculo-skeletal and nervous systems integrate resetting our bodies, and in turn, our physiology (Erika Mather, 2019). Digestive and immune functions increase and our minds become clear. If you are in it just for the physical benefits, is that really something you want to skip?

The heat is upon us! If you have been enjoying the summer weather these last few days, this is a reminder to drink water! A good rule of thumb for water intake is drinking about half your weight in water (i.e. if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink around 75 oz of water each day)

If you are past that and already starting to get symptoms of heat exhaustion (heavy sweats, dizziness, nausea, clammy skin, headache, paleness, weak pulse, muscle cramps), there are foods that help you recover! Your mind may immediately go to sports drinks and water, however, it is best to consume foods high in potassium and magnesium.

Fun facts: potassium & magnesium are micronutrients that help the body regulate functions such as protein synthesis, blood pressure regulation, energy creation, muscle contraction and relaxation, neurotransmitter communication, just to name a few.

Some foods high in potassium are bananas, tomatoes, milk, mangos, spinach, sweet potatoes, & oranges. Some magnesium rich foods are yogurt, leafy greens, seeds, and soy.

On another note, high protein diets should be avoided when dehydrated due to increased strain on the liver (alcohol should also be avoided). Stay healthy my friends!

The Merriam-Webster definition of meditation is ‘engaging in contemplation or reflection.’ Though the idea is at right forward enough, many people find it beyond them, and understandably so! Internet and social media are powerful tools that bring knowledge (and entertainment) to our fingertips at the touch of a button, leading our brains down endless rabbit holes, some thought provoking, and other not so useful. Bottom line is, our brains have so much noise/stimulation, it makes it harder for us to process linear thought. Even reading long posts (such as this) will probably lose readers before I even get to the juice, so let’s take it back to the subject: meditation. Studies show that meditating for just a mere 2 minutes a day can increase your productivity trifold, and contrary to popular belief/misconception, meditation can be done anywhere at any time, so how do we put that theory to the test?

MEDITATION IN PRACTICE: The average person has between 50-60,000 thoughts per day. My pic showcases just a few that potentially run through the mind probably in the matter of seconds. Think of your thoughts as files that need to be put away. The idea is to give yourself 2 minutes to “sort” through those “files.” Using the analogy of files, once they are properly sorted, isn’t it easier to go back and review when you’re ready? Here is an easy way to get into the habit of incorporating meditation into your life. (Steps in comments)

In the original Bikram dialogue of half-moon pose with oadahastasana, there is a line during the forward fold that says “with your smiling, happy face.” Well, if you weren’t aware, there is actually science to that!

Neuropeptides are tiny molecules that allow neurons to communicate emotional responses like happiness, sadness, anger, excitement, or depression the whole body. In this case, the physical act of smiling releases neuropeptides that work toward fighting off stress and pain. When you smile, a flood of dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin in are ALL released, lowering blood pressure and heart rate, helping your body to relax. The endorphin release, which, if you’ve taken my class, you’ve definitely heard me talk about, is a natural pain reliever, which allows your body to be pushed a little bit further than you’d normally feel comfortable with, so as a reminder, don’t forget to smile on the mat!
