An explanation.

That moment shaped the way he practices today.
At Walsh Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, we believe you deserve to understand what’s happening in your body — not just be handed a quick answer and sent on your way.

💥 That tension headache? It’s not just stress.

If the pain starts at the base of your neck and wraps around your forehead, it’s often rooted in tight muscles like the suboccipitals or levator scapulae—not “just in your head.”

In this quick guide, Dr. Walsh breaks down the real causes of tension headaches (like poor posture and stress overload) — and what actually helps.

📘 What X-Rays Can Reveal After Whiplash

One of the key things we look for after a motor vehicle accident is the cervical curve in the neck. A healthy spine should show a forward curve in this area. After a whiplash injury, that curve may flatten or even reverse.

This change is a clear sign of ligament damage. When the cervical spine loses its natural shape, it can no longer absorb and distribute force the way it was designed to. Over time, this can lead to:

• Degenerative disc disease
• Facet joint arthritis
• Chronic neck pain and stiffness

The further the spine drifts from its ideal shape, the more mechanical stress it places on your body with everyday movement.

Whiplash isn’t always a minor issue. Depending on speed and force, it can range from mild soft tissue strain to more serious spinal damage.

Injuries may include:

-Torn spinal ligaments (like the ALL and ligamentum flavum)
-Muscle tearing in the cervical spine
-Disc injury or herniation
-Vertebral fractures
-Loss of the natural neck curve (visible on X-ray)
-Seat belt trauma to the chest, hip, or shoulder
-In high-impact cases, even arterial damage or spinal fracture

One of the challenges? Symptoms may not appear for days or even weeks after the accident.

📖 Dr. Patrick Walsh breaks it down in detail in the full blog post.

Whiplash refers to a rapid whipping motion of the head caused by sudden force — often from a motor vehicle accident. Even at low speeds, the body can go from still to moving in milliseconds. When that happens, the neck may extend beyond what muscles and ligaments can safely absorb.

Dr. Patrick Walsh explains the mechanics of whiplash and how it affects spinal structures.

That nagging neck or upper shoulder ache? It might not be stress—it could be your levator scapulae.

This small but mighty muscle is one of the most common culprits behind stiff necks, postural fatigue, and even tension headaches.

In this post, I explain what it is, why it gets so tight (especially in desk workers and side sleepers), and exactly how to stretch it safely.

If you live in Hagerstown, Halfway, or Robinwood and feel like your neck is always tight… this one’s for you.

📖 Learn the stretch:
https://www.wwcofhagerstown.com/how-to-stretch-the-levator-scapulae

The levator scapulae is a slender muscle located at the side and back of your neck. As its name suggests, its primary role is to elevate the scapula — your shoulder blade — especially during shoulder shrugs and certain neck movements. It runs from the upper cervical spine (C1–C4 vertebrae) and ...
