Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Breastfeeding week is August 15-21.
This essay is a small collection of stories of what sleep practices in East and Southeast Asian families look like.
Do we rely on science, follow our cultural practices or simple act on instinct when it comes to sleep?
This is in hope to help perinatal healthcare providers gain new insights into AANHPI communities to deliver culturally congruent care.

La Leche League USA helps parents, families, and communities to breastfeed, chestfeed, and human milk feed their babies through parent-to-parent support. LLL USA encourages, informs, educates, supports, and promotes the use of human milk and the intimate relationship and development that comes from....

1. The journey of breastfeeding is not just about the mother and child; it involves everyone around them. First and foremost, the father—or whoever is closest to the mother—plays a vital role, as do both the maternal and paternal families and the surrounding community. Grandparents are also crucial; their experience and understanding of breastfeeding can have a significant impact on the entire process of childbirth and breastfeeding.
2. “Natural” doesn’t always mean easy
We often think of breastfeeding as something entirely natural. Consequently, when parents—especially first-time moms—encounter difficulties, they tend to blame themselves, believing it is their own fault. Just because something is natural does not mean it is easy. Therefore, if you run into any issues, you should seek support immediately.
3.
There is so much information that it creates a lot of noise, making it hard to hear your own voice. Wheter you are a first-time parent or experienced, listen to your inner voice. If anything is wrong with your baby or yourself, you are the first to know—before the doctor, before the consultant, before anyone else. You are the one who truly knows yourself and your baby.

1.

Common misunderstandings:
1. Crying means low milk production
Babies cry to communicate many needs, like being uncomfortable, wet, or wanting closeness. Milk production operates on supply and demand; the more you breastfeed or pump, the more milk you make. Introducing formula due to a misreading of your baby’s cues can reduce this signal, turning a perceived shortage into a real one.

2. You must eat or drink specific things to produce milk
Production depends on frequent milk removal, not special foods. Supplements are often ineffective if they do not target your specific hormonal needs. Focus instead on frequent feeding with a correct latch and good positioning.

3. Comparing your milk to others
Breast milk is the mother's source of nourishment for her baby. Its composition changes from colostrum to mature milk, and varies based on whether a baby is premature or growing through different months. Every mother and baby pair is unique, so milk naturally varies and cannot be compared. Just trust that the milk your body provides for your own baby is the most natural and best option for them.

Những hiểu lầm thường gặp:

Engorgement
-Breast engorgement during the first week is a normal, usually temporary phase associated with your body adjusting its milk supply.
-Around day 3 to 4, blood flow to the breasts increases to kickstart the milk factory causing a feeling of fullness.
-Sugar begins to appear in the colostrum, drawing water in and causing the milk to transition from yellow to a whiter color. From this point, your milk will be sweeter, thinner, and more plentiful—as long as your body receives the right "signals" it needs.
-This is why feeding your baby frequently and/or expressing milk during the first days and weeks is important.

--
How to Prevent
-Hold your baby on your chest, in your arms, or keep them right beside you. Skin-to-skin contact makes frequent feeding much easier.
-Breastfeed or express milk at least every 2 hours during the day, and at least twice at night.
-Gently massage your breasts in a way that feels comfortable. This helps move excess fluid out of the tissues.
-Apply a cold pack to your breasts for 10–20 minutes, then take a 20-minute break. Pausing between cold applications "wakes up" the breast tissue and is more effective than continuous icing.
-Taking a shower and letting warm water flow between your shoulder blades helps you relax.

Why Do Newborns Feed So Often?
-At birth, a baby's stomach is only the size of a cherry. By the end of the first month, it grows to the size of an egg. They need to eat frequently because they fill up and empty quickly.
-The more often you feed your baby or remove milk, the more milk your body is stimulated to make.
-Every person's breast storage capacity is different. If your storage capacity is lower, your baby may need to nurse more frequently. If it is higher, your baby might go longer between feeds.

-
How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?
-Most babies lose a little weight during the first few days of life. After day 4, your baby will start gaining weight and should return to their birth weight by 10 to 14 days of age.
-The baby has at least 6 heavy wet diapers and 3–5 dirty diapers within a 24-hour period.
-The baby is alert, active, and responsive when awake.
-Your breasts feel softer after nursing.
At 6 to 8 weeks of age your baby may not have as many dirty diapers, which is completely normal. However, they should still have at least 5 wet diapers every day.

A question that new parents often ask is: Will I have milk right after giving birth?

-Even though your breasts may still feel soft, you already have some colostrum, starting from around week 16 of pregnancy.
-This is a special type of milk. It is thick and yellow in color. Its properties make it ideal for your baby's very first feeding by mouth, containing all the nutrients your baby needs at that time.
-Although the amount of colostrum during the first few days is very small, it contains protein, fat, vitamins, hormones, and many antibodies that help protect your baby from illness.

How often should I breastfeed my baby?

-Breastfeed your baby whenever they are hungry, or at least 10 times or more within a 24-hour period.
-If your baby sleeps a lot, you can wake them up to breastfeed.
-Let your baby decide when they want to feed and when they are finished.
-When low milk supply becomes an issue and the usual measures aren't effective, take a closer look at your diet. Breastfeeding experts, Lisa Marasco and Diana West, suggest focusing on the following nutrients that are important for milk production: protein, vitamin B12, calcium, iron, zinc, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids and healthy fats, as well as fiber.

Human anatomy and physiology remain essentially the same across countries and across time. However, environmental, social, and cultural factors make the journey for mothers and infants in Vietnam look different from that in the States. I am learning, unlearning, and relearning many times over. One thing that remains consistently true is that this journey was never meant to be a lone one but needs to be accompanied by the entire society, by the community of people around them, both near and far, known and unknown, and quite possibly an endless chain of linked hands.

On another note, one of the highlights of my recent trip was my visit to The Joyful Nest, connecting and exchanging with wonderful colleagues in Vietnam

We need to talk about the “is he a good baby?” question.

Because somewhere along the way, “good” became code for sleeps through the night, settles easily, and doesn’t need much. And by that logic, half the most normal newborn behaviour on earth gets quietly filed under “bad.”

So here’s your official guide to telling the difference. On the left, all the things that get a baby unfairly labelled difficult, the night feeds, the contact naps, the 3am parties for one. On the right, actual bad behaviour. The white-collar crime. The tax evasion. The Ponzi schemes.

Notice your baby isn’t on the right side, mama. Wanting you is not a character flaw. It’s just a baby being a baby.

Tag a mama whose “badly behaved” newborn has, to date, a completely spotless criminal record. 🤍
